I borrowed a really nice juicer from my husband's daughter...just to see if I'd want one for us, and I've decided no. It seems like such a waste. I make my own veggie broth from leftover veggies and peeling but using the juicer...well, I just had SO MUCH left over. I don't get it! I feel like I'm missing out on all of the " goodies " in the veggies that I'm juicing. What am I doing wrong? I could really use some enlightening. Guest guest
well hey there Stef.... I think juicing is a matter of preference. I personally like it because it does save the time of making salads, or veggie side dishes, esp. for lunch. I just throw my salad fixings in the juicer and drink my salad. Its a good way too to get extra vagetables in your day without the hassle of eating. I do save the pulp for fillers in soups and casseroles. For instance, tonight I am making a tofu loaf that does not really call for any vegetable substance, so I am adding my weekend juicing pulp for the fiber content and binding. It does take a lot of veggies to get a glass of juice, but to me, its worth it. Its very refreshing after a good workout too! I very seldom juice fruit. A good rule of thumb amongst juicers is to " eat your fruit and juice your veggies " . I use fruit and bran more in smoothies, with an occasional apple in my veggie juices. Cleaning up is not a problem if you use a good ole toothbrush! But you do have to clean the basket right away, nothing like dried pulp at bedtime to tackle! Let me know if you want some juicing links... Guest guest
I love this reply. I love how Zen it is and how much it says about the peace that comes with eating meat-free and finding reverence in all living things no matter how many legs it has. Namaste! Guest guest
Nancy, Sorry about your loss. I felt the same when I saw the post. My mom died in 1999 at 44 to colon cancer ( I was 23) and man would I give anything to have our weekly dinners again. I am blessed now with a pretty good step-mom but lets face it no one can ever fill the shoes of the real thing. Thursday, January 8, 2009, 3:02 PM I love any kind of beans, especially kidney beans or chick peas on salad, and I love salads with lots of fresh vegetables on it.....and different kinds of greens.....which my husband refers to as " weeds " .....so funny. I also like to add pine nuts, dried cranberries, sliced almonds or walnuts. Sounds good to me! You are so lucky to have a mother to have dinner with once a week. I would give most anything to be able to have dinner with my mother just one more time. She died September 18th, 1984 at only 58 years of age. I was 36 years old. She was my best friend and the smartest woman I think I ever knew.......and she loved me and my children so. I wish I could have her back......and now my 21 year old granddaughter is with her. I wish I could have them both back. Enjoy your mother while you can.....you never know when you may not have the opportunity to eat dinner with her ever again. AND, don't forget to wear your seatbelt for Brittany. In tears again..... Nancy C. East Texas - Audrey Snyder Thursday, January 08, 2009 1:21 PM Salad ideas? My mom and I have decided to have supper together every Wednesday night -- I have to schedule these things because I'm so busy! Anyway, she complained that she didn't know what to fix for me other than salad (her standard complaint). I said that both of us could stand to have a salad once a week for supper... So that's our plan. What kinds of things do you all put on salads to make them more exciting? My favorites are Greek salad with feta, kalamata olives, red onions, etc., or taco salad. What else? Thanks! Audrey S.
Guest guest
Nancy and Steph, I'm sorry you lost your moms. I can't begin to imagine how awful that is. I know I am very lucky to have my mom, and while she's not always my best friend, she usually is. One of my girlfriends in high school lost her mom when we were fifteen, and I think about that often. I'm also lucky enough to still have Grandma, who is 87 and still gets around pretty well (and is on the internet for at least 2 hours a day!!) Audrey S.
