Guest guest
For what it's worth: I take a daily vegetarian multivitamin that includes vitamin B-12 (among many other things). Several years ago I collapsed and was taken to the emergency room. The neurologist on call that evening happened to be my regular neurologist, and he knows I'm vegan. He therefore concluded that my collapse must have been caused by a B-12 deficiency, and he ordered a blood test for B-12 levels and an injection of B-12. Blood was drawn, the injection given, and my condition did not change. After they did a CT scan, they finally sent me home. The following week I called my neurologist's office and asked about the results of the B-12 test. The doctor came on the line himself, and asked me if they had drawn the blood for the test before or after giving me the B-12 shot. I said they drew the blood before they gave the shot. He seemed kind of disappointed: My B-12 level was normal. He could not blame my vegan diet for the collapse. Another data point: My cats are on professionally-formulated vegn cat food--a combination of Evolution and Vegecat. Recently I volunteered one of my cats (the one I've had the longest, so she's been on a vegan diet the longest) to be in a study of the health of vegan cats. My cat's vitamin B-12 level was in the high normal range. Her taurine was good too. Jim Sinclair jisincla
Guest guest
The article from the vegan doctor says: To get the full benefit of a vegan diet, vegans should do ONE of the following: eat fortified foods two or three times a day to get at least three micrograms (µg or mcg) of B12 a day or take one B12 supplement daily providing at least 10 micrograms or take a weekly B12 supplement providing at least 2000 micrograms. Therefore, my consumption of fortified foods should be enough, according to this article and my own doctor.
