Big Pig Owners Say Pet Is Not a Threat

March 07, 2005 6:44 PM EST

LARWILL, Ind. - A couple whose reclusive potbellied pig triggered an investigation by town officials insist their pet is not a threat to public health.

The town attorney sent a letter to Lou Anne and Michael Garwood inquiring about their pig after officials in the town about 20 miles west of Fort Wayne received complaints about a pig estimated to weigh 300 pounds being kept as a house pet in violation of local ordinance.

The Garwoods, however, say Ruthie the pig weighs only about half that much - and she no longer shares their residence.

The couple say they keep the pig in a small pen lined with a mat and filled with old couch cushions inside their garage.

The Garwoods say Ruthie is a pet, not livestock.

"I told (officials) this was not a pig pig. This is a potbellied pig," Lou Ann Garwood told The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne for a Saturday story.

"You'd be crazy to have a pig in town. This is like a dog."

She said she was going to talk to Town Attorney Greg Hockemyer about presenting information about potbellied pigs to the town council next Thursday.

"If they want to come and ask the council to consider an exception, that would probably be considered," Hockemyer said. "It's out. It's not a big problem. Now we can address it."
