Well, they (and you by extention) are really missing out. Although

I'm sure Los Padres will be nice (where is that, btw?), it will be

so early there I doubt you will see much in the way of good

wildflowers. This is a 50-year bloom in Death Valley. I saw so much

desert 5-spot, I almost got sick of seeing it. I keyed out so many

amazing plants -- super-geek. There were people actually kayaking on

the main playa, we have had so much rain. It was just amazing.

And, yeah, you know I had to tell you ;P

Oh, yum! I am making pizza tonight after this inspiration.

I went camping in Death Valley this weekend (awesome flower display,

btw) and for dinner, we made pine nut couscous with garlic, broccoli

and summer squash. So good and so fast. I eat tons of couscous when

camping. Then we had some of Uncle Eddie's trail mix cookies for

dessert. Yum!

Yeah, it is YOUR birthday, not theirs. Good luck with the

convincing. If you do end up down in my neck of the (non-)woods, let

me know. Twould be fun to meet up for a day or some-such.

Los Padres sounds nice, too, though. Great part of the country.

I would really enjoy doing a vegan camping trip. I go backpacking

quite a bit and everyone else is always so curious about my food.

It's a whole different part of the adventure. It would be nice to

eat with like-minded folks instead of discussing my diet over every

meal. No one ever lectures me about eating meat or dairy, though,

after watching me hike each day. :)

Yeah, they are a great group. Although I live in Nevada, I go on

some of the Cal Nat Plant Soc field trips, too.

Ah, beautious Barstow. Yeah, that would be outright hate to suggest

someone move there. At least Bakersfield gets some decent concerts.

Actually, Baker has The Mad Greek, so really that's better...

But, seriously, congrats on getting the Death Valley trip through. I

don't know of anywhere in the area with vegan food to be honest.

Only whatever may be vegan in a gas station food store. I always

just bring all my own food. :(

Fraggle;

I generally stick with the good old ethnic stand-bys when eating out

here. Thai, Indian, etc. There are some tasty places here and I've

found them very accomodating, probably because there are so many

other restaraunts to choose from in town. There is also a great,

tiny Mexican place I go to pretty often. Their veggie burrito sans

cheese and sour cream is so tasty. There is a raw food place, but,

since my body doesn't deal well with too much raw food, I have only

been there once. I can highly recommend their veggie/fruit juices,

though. Oh yeah, and that local sub chain I mentioned one time,

which will make any of their subs with fake meat. That should give

you some ideas to start with, and if you end up coming, I can

provide more details on, say, the best places.
