Guest guest
Um I'd like to know who had the audacity to say that no jobs were lost...because they certainly did not talk to the owner of the local independently owned coffeehouse in my neighborhood. When a ban on smoking was in effect she lost 1/2 of her business. I am sure that came to loss of some coffee servers jobs not to mention loss of her business income. And this is a fairly large coffee house... a fixture in the community. Nor did they talk to my local independently owned bar down the street. Now that none of the drinkers can smoke inside business has gone down. I like a healthy lifestyle but I see no need to force in others...especially since I am not the one that is going to lose the job or income. Why do some feel the need to FORCE others to conform to their own standards of behavior? I agree when there is a real hurt to others that's why we have laws....but when it comes to health habits that is not my business. It's a sort of fascism...everyone must do it MY way. Guest guest
We have just celebrated the 1st complete year of our smoking ban and it has caused job losses in the bars but I think that the decline had started before the ban. Drinking in bars is very expensive in Ireland so people are beginning to drink more at home. The CO2 levels in the lungs or bar staf was measured after the year and it had dropped 45%. This gain is carried on to the family of bar staf because the effects linger on the cloths for hours and is carried home to young children. The ban is the only way to go. , lv2breathe@a... wrote: > > Um I'd like to know who had the audacity to say that no jobs were > lost...because they certainly did not talk to the owner of the local independently > owned coffeehouse in my neighborhood. Guest guest
You live in California? The ban is still in effect, so I am wondering what you are talking about when you say "when a ban on smoking WAS in effect." As to forcing others to live a life style. When smoke stops at the mouth of the smoker, then there isn't a problem. Smokers force their dirty habits on others. They cost MILLIONS every year in fire damage. The cost to clean up after them is atrocious since they insist on flicking their butts where ever they are. Their health care is costing everyone else since the cost of caring for them rises the costs of everyone else's health insurance. Furthermore, they are directly responsible for numerous deaths, not just their own, every year. From the idiots that insist on smoking in cars who light up and run into or over someone else or drop the light part in their laps and worry about it instead of where they are going. They cost the lives of numerous fire fighters every year both in home fires, car fires/wrecks and forest fires. Guess what, the petitions that were signed had an over whelming number of signatures from waitresses who couldn't do any other job but were tired of being sick due to the smoke! Sorry, no sympathy for smokers! And so they should - when someone is causing very definite, proved harm to others they should be stopped from doing so. At present smokers FORCE non-smokers to breathe air full of smoke and increase their risk of dyng young from horrible diseases that they most likely would not get if they were not exposed to the smoke of people who care only for what they want to do and not the wellbeing of others. Smokers take away the free choice of non-smokers and then cry foul when the tables look like being turned. A smoker should not FORCE me to inhale smokey air. Guest guest
It is good to have concrete evidence of the harm done by smoking - thanks Mary.
