Guest guest
Most Mother's Day flowers are far from green Oodles of Americans will buy flowers for their moms for Mother's Day (that's this Sunday, you slackers), but not many will consider the environmental impacts. Conventionally grown flowers " are such a high-value crop that it takes a huge amount of pesticides to make them perfect, " said Pesticide Action Network's Martha Olson Jarocki. And nearly 70 percent of cut flowers sold in the U.S. are imported from countries like Ecuador and Colombia, where labor is cheap and pesticide regulations less stringent. Still, if you're not ready to think outside the bouquet, try buying organic or locally grown blooms, or plan ahead for next year and grow them yourself. Ma will appreciate it -- and even if she doesn't, well, Mother Earth will. And Bugs Bunny is a friend of mine Eating him I'd feel like Frankenstein Eating flesh seems pretty foul to me
Guest guest
Thanks Fraggle - Colin buys me flowers quite often - so I'll show him the email so he can check where they are from. I have a feeling most of the flowers here are either local or from Holland - but best check. Guest guest
I remember a few years back writing to the head of Del Monte about the use of pesticides affecting his workers, and the fact that they were not allowed to have a union. It really annoys me. Guest guest
I remember seeing a tv programme about one family who made a living that way. The dad was ill with a chronic cough, and they couldn't afford the medicine for it. Some locals kept giving him cough medicine, but he died of cancer or something. It was sad that he couldn't afford any medical help. Guest guest
I recall seeing an article on TV in Florida that stated that the migrant workers had to pay out of state fees for sending their kids to school while they worked for very little money in the state Mary , fraggle <EBbrewpunx@e...> wrote: >

Guest guest
Locally, the high school kids raise native wildflowers that, for a small fee, can be planted in the town square in Mom's name. Or a tree in a park or on a city street with a plaque. Guest guest
It's the same here - it's all part of the divide and conquer scheme! Guest guest
Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine <g> Medicaid has been slashed to the bare bones and most states aren't even offering it to anyone but children. Unfortunately the system is so full of doctor fraud that it will probably end up going belly up. But you'll notice that the ones whining about social programs never complain about corporate welfare! Guest guest
How do you figure they get nothing for their tax money, which btw, is usually only sales tax. I volunteer and do tax forms for migrants and other low income folks and they don't generally pay any state or federal income tax and most get the earned income credit which is usually far more than they pay in sales taxes in a year. Not to say what they are paid is a good thing but I don't see where you are coming from on the tax thing.
