Generally, in fiction, you don't footnote and have appendix.

His book starts out " This is a work of fiction. Characters, corporations,

institutions, and organizations in this novel are the product of the

author's imagination, or, if real, are used fictitiously without any intent

to describe their actual conduct. However, references to real people,

institutions, and organizations that are documented in footnotes are

accurate. Footnotes are real. "

The problem with Crichton is that he makes statements as fact and in a

paragraph where he makes his fictious statements, he will include a sentence

that he footnotes. The implication to the average reader is that the

paragraph or page of chapter is fact, not fiction. He cherry picks his

footnotes and, in some cases, uses old information or information from

sources that have been discredited.

He ends his book with an " Author's Message " which he begins by telling us he

spent 3 years reading environmental texts " I have had an opportunity to look

at a lot of date, and to consider many points of view. . . I conclude: " By

implication he has become expert.

One of his oft repeated conclusions is " Nobody knows, " " Nobody knows, " he

" suspects . . . the atmospheric components will be minor. "

One of his " suspects " is ludicrous as it clearly contradicts one of his

repeated statements throughout the book (cutting down trees is the cause of

everything and we have killed most of the wilderness and state parks by

mismanagement) " I suspect the people of 2100 will be much richer than we

are, consume more energy, have a smaller global population, and enjoy more

wilderness than we have today. I don't think we have to worry about it. "

Lucicrous in that once a wilderness is destroyed it does not return.

Particularly if part of the destruction is by logging. Tree farms may

reappear but a " wilderness " never does.

His last comment in the Author's Message is " Everybody has an agenda.

Except me. " Crichton suffers from Pinnochio Syndrome.

I'm not quite sure what point you are trying to make. If he starts his book

saying 'This is a work of fiction' then he is hardly trying to kid anyone

that it is fact.

the way its presented, with footnotes and all that, it makes it appear that the premise of the book is true..that global warming is just some cooked up plot foisted on us all by whacked out environmentalists who have this agenda.... It doesn't sound like the sort of book I would read. Isn't it true that there are some scientists who say that global warming isn't happening?

The fact is that far too many people read the book and believe it to be the

gospel. I have heard folks quoting the guy and using his book as a

reference.

Of course, if you believe that global warming is a crock, then his book is

great.

Yeah and their agenda is making money and the money is never spent on anything but making more money for the higher ups in the environmental agencies. Greenpeace is a farce. PETA is the worst of the worst and so forth and so on. And, by gum, he can prove it cause he ain't got no agenda!

Well there are always other points of view. Do you hear a lot in America about the view that there is no global warming? It's hardly mentioned here at all.

What are Crichton's other books like then - are they all alternative political comment or fiction. I have heard one about time travel - is it called Timeline - which a colleague at work enjoyed. That didn't sound like political comment.

every news report on global warming is echoed by one aying "we don't know" or "it isn't happening because"

i would say most americans think that the whole thing is a wash, they hear one thing, and then hear the exact opposite, and don't know wot to make of it

which is the whole point...

sow a little doubt, and it grows...

much easier to just shrug yer shoulders and ignore it all, bundle up the kids in the SUV and drive the 3 blocks to dairy queen

michael chrichton has written jurassic park, lost world, the andromeda strain, sphere, eaters of the dead (made into the move the 13th warrior) and congo..amongst some others..they all seem to be made into movies eventually....

Alfred E. Newman's evil doppleganger and the war monger cheerleaders sing the "Ain't no global warming" song all the time.

In fact, all the little Bushdanistras are out in force today with their cheering as Dumbya opened up all the no roads areas to roads and logging.

Re: Crichtonis Safeway Sucking Your Soul?

you have to read the book jo

the way its presented, with footnotes and all that, it makes it appear that the premise of the book is true..that global warming is just some cooked up plot foisted on us all by whacked out environmentalists who have this agenda.... Jo Cwazy May 6, 2005 2:42 PM Re: Crichtonis Safeway Sucking Your Soul? I'm not quite sure what point you are trying to make. If he starts his booksaying 'This is a work of fiction' then he is hardly trying to kid anyonethat it is fact.JoTo send an email to - And Bugs Bunny is a friend of mine

RE: Crichtonis Safeway Sucking Your Soul?

Linda,

where in the world do you get this tripe from??

Yeah and their agenda is making money and the money is never spent on anything but making more money for the higher ups in the environmental agencies. Greenpeace is a farce. PETA is the worst of the worst and so forth and so on. And, by gum, he can prove it cause he ain't got no agenda!
