Guest guest
Hey gang, I was so inspired last week by all the talk of farmer's markets, I decided to visit one on Sunday. The only farmer's market open in my city on Sunday has an Asian focus, which is fine by me. It was fun to check out all the interesting produce, much of it I recognized, but there was one particular green I couldn't place. I asked what it was and it was <something> choy. It was longer than baby bok choy and it was dark green, with smallish leaves and the ends were sporting bright yellow flowers. I asked if it was like bok choy and was told " no " , with no further elaboration. It had a funny smell - I couldn't place it. Anyone have any idea what it might have been? I remember reading, some months ago, that Guru was recommending bitter melon juice for diabetics. I saw two kinds of bitter melon (Indian and Chinese) so I bought a couple of each to try them out. This morning I tested my blood glucose and it was a bit high at 126 (due to some indiscretions yesterday). I juiced one of the bitter melons and drank the juice and re-tested about 45 minutes later. My blood glucose was 99, which seems like a pretty significant improvement. I plan to start using this regularly and will see what happens. This veggie is aptly named, by the way. :-) Sharon
Guest guest
Wow, what a great website, Diane! Well, I don't think it was gai choy. The yau choy is closer, but it doesn't show those yellow buds. It's interesting that bok choy will sprout yellow flowers, though I don't think this was bok choy. When I asked the guy if it was similar to bok choy and he said " no " I would have thought he'd clarify if they were actually related. I am going back to that farmer's market on Sunday and I'm going to pester folks until I get a straight answer. I may even buy some. :-) Sharon strayfeather1 wrote: > Sharon, > You got me curious -- was it yau choy? Guest guest
Hi Sharon Keep us posted. Here in backward Connecticut I am surprised to even see a bitter melon. My farmers markets wont open for another month or so. We do have a co-op opening close by next month, I hope it survives in this area and brings some veggies we don't usually see that are affordable.
