I prefer the vegetarian foods and the fact that I can make my own meat analogs without having to buy them. I grew up eating very little meat. I am not a fanatic. My husband eats a lot more meat than I ever would. To me it is a personal, daily choice. And, sometimes, it is a choice I make meal by meal. Some medications I have taken, do take, or will take in future had, have or will have some animal components. I try not to drive myself nuts with it or I would be out in the desert somewhere eating bushes. Lisa Marie ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
I think it's a very personal defination, based on WHY you chose to eat this way (for some, it's a diet, for some it's a total lifestyle. For me personally, it's a little of both). I know in my case what was/is okay with me has evolved. For example, my husband is an omni, so it is nessesary for me to continue to buy meat. I also wear leather shoes to work (best comfort) and can't turn down a perfectly good shrimp when it is offered. My theory is that if everyone did MORE, a small FEW would not have to be responsible for everthing. I make decisions every day regarding what I eat and what I buy, and why. Whatever I choose, I know I have weighed my options carefully.. I do not know where my eggs come from, and can't afford to eat all organic, or all local. (Though I would love too). It's just not the right choice, right now. (Though I'm addicted to organic apples..yum!) If you feel that taking your medication is the best option for you, regardless of where it came from, then don't sweat it. In the end, you can't help anyone or anything else out if your'e not your best... As for the jelly beans, if your friend is really struggling with the issue, tell her to send a few this way.... Guest guest
I guess I am a bad vegetarian, too. I actually eat a tiny bit of salmon and king crab when available. It probably has enough good for the body things to make up for the bad for the body stuff. I am a vegetarian for health reasons. I appreciate the animals right to live, but if it came down to him or me,....... Katie MP <mariepollard wrote: I'm just curious to what extreme do you all take your vegetarianism. Guest guest
Since I'm a newbie to the whole veggie diet, I'm still at the very basics of no meat. That's it. Gelatin, cheeses with meat stuff, my prenatals with animal parts, will have to wait until I actually have the time to read labels and scrutinize everything to be a bit more strict about my vegetarianism. Also, for me it's about the health, not the animal suffering or environmental impact or whatever. I'm having a hard time finding a vegge information sites that don't bring me back to PETA! I'm not trying to convert anyone, it's a personal choice. I'll still use lanolin creams and enjoy my leather couch! Liz
Guest guest
Well Katie that's kind of what I meant by balance... Guest guest
I take one medication and it's for migraines and I only take one pill if a migraine hits. I'm sure it's been tested and will continue to be tested on animals. I have no choice, I can't stay home when an intense one hits me and suffer for 3 days. When one is that strong I would take anything anyone handed me.........even if the Pusher Man knocked on my door. Guest guest
Well, I guess I have to be a bit more extreme with my vegetarianism but it's not an over-zealous love of animals (although I do have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 bird and a teenage boy). I've got a severe allergy to any kind of seafood and they think it's probably best that I avoid any kind of fish also. You wouldn't believe how many things have anchovies in them! And it's almost like an allergy to meat now too. I literally get sick if I eat something that has any kind of meat broth in it. I don't take vitamins, but I know I should, and I never did like jello. I have gotten rid of most leather stuff I own, but that was because it was already worn out and I just chose to replace it with a non-animal replacement. On Behalf Of MP Wednesday, April 04, 2007 10:34 AM Extremes? I'm just curious to what extreme do you all take your vegetarianism. Guest guest
Hi Marie, I consider myself a " practical vegan " . I eat 99% vegan but occasionally (like 1-2 times per month) will eat a little cheese or seafood if I am at a restaurant with no good vegan options. I personally won't eat poultry or meat, but healthwise a little wouldn't be a tragic problem. My teens do eat meat outside the home, and use milk and cheese at home, but also eat plenty of vegan meals too. They do understand the health issues of eating animal products. I use Dr. Bronner's soap because it is made from vegetable oils and not animals. I do take some natural supplements in gelatin capsules, but would switch to vegetable sources if I found them. Every day we make decisions which affect our bodies and the planet. Since I travel a lot, I don't always have perfect vegan options, but I try to do my best for my own personal health, the planet and for animals. On Monday I will be going to Peru for two weeks, and have no idea what my dietary choices will be, but am sure I will find something to eat other than steak or chicken!!! Guest guest
My son came home with this from school and I keep it on my refrigeration becuase I think this sums up alot. I Make A Difference.... One morning just before dawn, a man woke early so he could watch the sunrise over the ocean. As he walked along the beach he came across a young girl who seemed to be doing something peculiar. She was picking starfish and throwing them into the sea - one after another. He asked her what she was doing. " The tide washes up all these starfish and they can't get back by themselves " she said " They will die in the sun if I don't throw them back into the water " . The man looked up and down the beach at the thousands of stranded starfish. He couldn't help telling her, " But there are so many starfish to save before sunrise. Why bother? You won't make much of a difference. " She paused for a moment, then picked up another starfish and threw it as fas as her slender arm could manage. With a satisfied grin she turned to the man and simply said " I made a difference to that one. " The man stood in silence considering the girls youthful wisdom. Then with a smile of his own, he reached down for a starfish and tossed it into the sea. I think I try to do what is best one day at a time. If everyone did a little at a time to help the world we wouldn't need fanatics. I consider myself a vegetarian but I still eat seafood. I am now doing the no dairy thing for over a month now. But a pizza is really calling my name. I think if I eat a slice of pizza it isn't the worst thing in the world and I will just start up with the no dairy thing the next day. Sorry to be sooooo long winded but I thought this passage was appropiate. Guest guest
Absolutely...and again, this is another illustration of waht I meant by " balance " (at least in my opinion) On 05 Apr 2007 04:57:24 -0700, Tracey Ward <traceymosko wrote: > > My son came home with this from school and I keep it on my > refrigeration becuase I think this sums up alot. > > I Make A Difference.... > > One morning just before dawn, a man woke early so he could watch the > sunrise over the ocean.
