Guest guest
My question is, typically how do vegetarians feel about owning animals that eat meat like a snake that would have to eat a mouse? And my sweet success, I went a holiday at familys who are not vegetarians and I can say that I am still a vegetarian. It has been over a month since my husband and I decided to go veg and we dont regret it at all, the site of meat makes us sick to our stomachs. We did recieve a lot of flak and were even called some names, on Easter, crazy I know and by family. My family is very traditional, we were also told we werent American. lol Any I hope everyone had a great day!

If the animal species isn't vegetarian then what would be the problem? Cat's will catch mice, lizards, birds and this is nature and natural for them. A snake isn't vegetarian and if you are going to keep it as a pet, it certainly isn't going to survive on a lettuce leaf so if you can't feed it a mouse then it's not the pet for you. My Grandparents owned a pet shop and I've had all types of pets, I prefer dogs and cats, I didn't care to feed the Oscar fish a goldfish nor a mouse to the snake, crickets to my frogs. It wasn't a problem for me as a teen but as I became a vegetarian it did bother me. Donna
Guest guest
Well, I'm fairly new here but for me, I have 1 bird, 2 cats and 2 dogs. The dogs and cats should eat meat, but the funny thing is, even when we did eat meat, they looked at it like it was foreign to them. They've always liked vegetables. My dog Daisy loves olive oil and vinegar from my salad. Put ranch dressing on a salad and she won't touch the plate if she were starving. My cats have always loved to eat vegetables. On occasion I used to make them rice and tuna or salmon if I was running low on cat food, and Charlie won't touch the salmon. He'll eat the tuna, but he makes sure I know he isn't happy about it. As far as snakes go - that's NEVER going to be an issue because there isn't a house in this world that is big enough for me and a snake!!!!! Your family will eventually come around. I'm in my 40s and it took my mom a long time to accept that I'm a vegetarian. Not that she condemned it, but she was concerned about the lack of protein in my and my son's diet. It took about a year, but now she supports me completely. My daughter doesn't have any problems with it either, but she understands that I became a vegetarian because I want to be here to see her daughter grow up. Now the one thing that's bothering her (and not really in a bad way) is that her one year old will take bites off a veggie burger, struggle to eat a piece of lettuce, eat a plain French fry, and drink water when that's not something my daughter does! It was pretty funny when we were at Burger King the other day because she kept offering Faith French fries with ketchup on them and she made the most awful faces. But I could hold my veggie burger over there and she'd take an actual bite off of it and sit there mashing it in her mouth until she could swallow it! And then she'd grab her bottle of water and take a drink off of it - another thing my daughter doesn't believe in. My best friend, the only other " family " I have up here (my mom lives about 400 miles away so I don't get to see her often), she makes sure that when I come to dinner she has things I can eat. They've all been really supportive of my being a vegetarian once they realized that I was serious about it. It takes time to get them to think you're not going through a phase, but in time they do come around. On Behalf Of Tabitha Sunday, April 08, 2007 9:19 PM Question and the sweet sound of success! Guest guest
Well, I wouldn't own a snake, or anything that has to feed him live animals. I just couldn't handle it. I go to the local pet store, and I can't stand to see a live animal that is food in the snake cages. Especially when one of them looks like one of my sweet little ratties. Splinter, and Sam are my rats, Angel is my hamster, and MJ is my rabbit. So yeah, I don't get anything that I have to feed them live animals. It just breaks my heart. I wont even go to a circus, rodeo, or anything like that cause the way they treat their animals. Nor will I suport it. I see the shriners trying to get money for to get the needy children to their circus, and I just pass them right up. I WILL NOT SUPORT THEM IN ANY WAY. As for being the only family member that don't eat meat, join the club. I am the only one in my family, and I live with one that eat's meat. I just tell her I wont buy her anything that has meat in it, don't ask. They suport me being a vegetarian. Now there are those that will coment about it, like when I first became a vegetarian, been since January, my pastor had mentioned something about God put these animals on this Earth for us to eat, I just let her talk. and today we had some guests at the church, one being a evangelist, and he mentioned about it too, and I just shrugged it off. I don't let it bother me, I just shrug it off, and let it be. Of course I guess that would be easier for me since I don't get teased about it. Guest guest
Congrats Tabitha, on your decision to become vegetarian and surviving a holiday gathering as one. I have no idea why meatheads feel the need to make fun of vegheads but I do know that it passes. Though I have to say being called not American is a new one on me lol. I hope it wasn't too distressing for you and your husband. Like it's so patriotic to have clogged arteries? lol That's a great question about pets because we do make a commitment to care for them according to their needs. Personally I would not want to own a pet that ate live prey. It would be too uncomfortable for me. I'm so glad my cats eat only dry food. This week I've been feeding a neighbor's kitty and she eats canned food which I don't like handling. My personal feeling is that if you are vegetarian because of respect for animals then part of that is respecting the animal for what it is. If it eats meat, it eats meat. If you don't want to feed it meat, you should get an herbivore pet. In my personal opinion (disagreements offlist please) people who try to turn their cats vegetarian are disrespectful and endangering the cat's health. Good luck in your new way of eating and don't be afraid to stick to your guns, or carrot sticks. Guest guest
Hi Tabitha, We have 8 dogs and about 10 cats. Dogs and cats (as well as snakes) are carnivorous (unlike humans). They have a different type of digestive system and different nutrient needs than we do. I wouldn't expect them to eat a vegetarian diet, just like I wouldn't expect a cow or rabbit to eat meat. My dogs do love avocados, though!!! :>) Bryan eating rice crackers and peanuts in the Miami airport , " Tabitha " <pLeOaVcEe wrote: > > My question is, typically how do vegetarians feel about owning animals > that eat meat like a snake that would have to eat a mouse? Guest guest
Edith, Next time, show them in Genesis what God's original diet for us was in the Garden of Eden. Plants, fruits and seeds. The animals were Adam and Eve's friends, NOT their food!!! :>) Bryan , Edith Acker <catherinechandler2371 wrote: Now there are those that will coment about it, like when I first became a vegetarian, been since January, my pastor had mentioned something about God put these animals on this Earth for us to eat, I just let her talk. and today we had some guests at the church, one being a evangelist, and he mentioned about it too, and I just shrugged it off. Guest guest
I could never own a snake for just that reason. And I like snakes wouldn't mind if I didn't' have to feed live creatures. When my mother lived with me she brought her chameleon (his name was Fred) and I even hated feeding him crickets. I have cats and feel bad enough but know they can't live without meat. I'm trying to talk myself into making there food but don't know if I can stomach it. But there is no way around feeding them what they need. And congratulations on your success with your family. I've been lucky - mine has never bugged me about eating meat for some reason. Guest guest
What country are vegetarians supposed to be from? LOL! I know I get that too, from my family, especially my family back east, they think it's because I'm californian! Amy Amy Quintana
Guest guest
Hope you don't have a long wait in the Airport Bryan. ...... We have 8 sweet lovable cats and one irresistible silly med. size dog....... and 5 beautiful horses. Oh their hair was glowing in the late afternoon sun, today. They were so beautiful grazing in the very green grass. The cats all get reg. cat food to eat, with a tiny bit of cheese about once a month. Not nearly as often as they would prefer. LOL. Never, never, never gonna own a reptile here. Yikes........ shutter here at the thought of having to feed it live animals and having a reptile in my house is just to much to fathom......... Guest guest
We had a tarantula spider at one time. His meals were mice. I tried once and the poor little mouse clung to the top of the cage. So Boris (our spider) got fed frogs. And I had a pet mouse. Sue ---- Samantha Lea 4/9/2007 4:28:25 PM RE: Re: Question and the sweet sound of success! I could never own a snake for just that reason. Guest guest
Never feed live. It's is dangerous to your pet and terribly traumatic to the mice. There's tons of information out there on feeding frozen or Natural Balance makes a ground diet for snakes and reptiles with excellent ingredients. Warming the food and offering it in a vibrating tray should tempt even the finicky eater. Also many animals fed mice don't actually need mice per se, so it's a good idea to study the diet and see if canned insects are an option, or other items, such as a blended diet. In cases of rescue, we have to do what we have to do to feed these animals who cannot be released, but overall, captivity isn't best for reptiles--especially the wild caught ones (which is not an uncommon way for people to get them to sell at pet stores and such. These animals are really more wild than domestic. I do wildlife rehab so I'm a bit biased, I suppose, about keeping wild animals wild.
