Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have been " eatin' vegan " for almost 2 months now. I'm doing well and I love how good I feel. I have a few questions about some foods that I am curious about. I'm hoping someone on this list will be able to help explain a few things: Why is Worchester Sauce not vegan? I often see in vegan recipes references to " vegan Worchester sauce -- found in Asian food stores. " Is it possible to purchase vegan Marshmallows? A quick look at the bag at the grocery store and I learned that they contain gelatin, no surprise there. I still love honey and plan on using it. Does that make me a pseudo vegan? Aren't the bees just doing what they do naturally? Why use agar powder instead of cornstarch? Is cornstarch not vegan? Are there other foods you were surprised to learn are not vegan? What are they? Curiosity is getting the best of me. Thanks for your help! Debra
Guest guest
Deb: The only one I really know of is that Worcestershire sauce usually contains anchovies! I was so grossed out when I learned about that! The weirdest non-vegan thing I never knew about was certain kinds of beer. Guest guest
> > Why is Worchester Sauce not vegan? I often see in vegan recipes references to " vegan Worchester sauce -- found in Asian food stores. " Check the labels for anchovies (as someone mentioned). > Is it possible to purchase vegan Marshmallows? A quick look at the bag at the grocery store and I learned that they contain gelatin, no surprise there. Vegan Sweets sells them online: http://www.veganessentials.com/catalog/vegansweets-marshmallows.htm I haven't tried this line (I try to avoid sweets), but my sister sent me several packages of Tiny Trapeze (Boston or thereabout) marshmallows which were quite good. Looks like Whole Foods ( & other online stores) has them: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/tinytrapeze/index.html My co-op does not have any yet. > I still love honey and plan on using it. Does that make me a pseudo vegan? Aren't the bees just doing what they do naturally? A bee person may correct me, but depending on the technique for retrieving the honey, the beekeeper may allow the bees to die OR may give the bees some sort of sugar to replace the honey (which the bees were making to feed themselves & their young); this is probably a semi-crude and outdated explanation. > Why use agar powder instead of cornstarch? Is cornstarch not vegan? Not sure about this one. I don't use a lot of agar or cornstarch, but they seem semi-interchangeable. And as Judy (I think) mentioned, you can make jello with agar agar. I've only done it a couple times, but it worked well. > Are there other foods you were surprised to learn are not vegan? What are they? Pills are often made with animal ingredients (magnesium stearate, for one, can be either vegetable or animal). Here in Minneapolis we have a large Muslim Somali population (no pork) and there are a few brands of vitamins, etc, in the mainstream stores with vegetarian pills. Capsules (the ones you can break apart and have the powder spill out) are usually made with gelatin (animal cartilage, I think). I live in a large metro area and can get a lot of things in non-capsule form. As people have said, don't sweat the small stuff; animal products are everywhere. Make small changes over time; every little bit helps. Heidi
Guest guest
Looking for vegan marshmellows, or other vegan supplies, I can't recomment Food Fight grocery store enough I'm local, so I luck out in that department, but shipping isn't too bad. They have a lot of products to try too. www.foodfightgrocery.com I haven't looked, but I'm sure you can find a fair amount of items on amazon.com too. I have to say I'm hooked on reading the vegan lunchbox blog online now. I'm slowly reading my way through all the old posts I'm pretty sure I'm going to go purchase that book of hers too. Good luck, and check out Food Fight, it's a fun website! Libby
