Guest guest
Are there any secrets to keeping produce fresh longer? I dont drive and so I shop only once or twice a month except for the quick run to the corner store for Milk and bread. I cant seem to keep the produce as long as Id like. By the end of the month we are all out. Itried to by it less ripe and that does work some what, but was wondering If I was missing any tricks. Please let me know if you have any secrets. Thanks so much.
Guest guest
Yes, you will definitely learn some new tricks from the folks here! One trick I'll offer is the Evert Fresh produce bags. These are amazing. I recently did a 5-day detox and I was eating a box of strawberries each day. I bought organic strawberries at a farmer's market on Sunday and needed them to last through Friday. They were 3 boxes for $7 (truly cheap for organic) and I bought 6 boxes. I put them in the Evert Fresh bags and, sure enough, they were still fresh on Friday! Usually I can't keep strawberries more than a day or two before they mold. You can buy them in lots of places, but here is a website: http://www.evertfresh.com/ And you can just rinse out the bags and re-use. The produce-fresh capability lasts for awhile but eventually does wear out. Guest guest
Do you keep it in the refrigerator? Guest guest
I asked a produce man once how to keep my salad mushrooms fresh. He said to wrap them in a paper towel and put them in a brown bag. I usually ended up throwing some away because they were " slimy " . Guest guest
Don't keep tomatoes in the fridge though! I forget what the reasoning is behind it (we go through so many, that I stick them in there anyway), but something to do with them spoiling faster. I'm going to have to find that article and re-read it since my two potted tomato plants are putting out blooms now. I should have tomatoes soon, unless my granddaughter picks them off in which case I'll be eating lots of roasted green tomatoes. (I've got to post some more recipes...) Guest guest
Also, have you checked Farmers Almancac? http://www.almanac.com/ They usually have some gardening tips and stuff like that that you can search online and lots of tips for keeping your garden grown produce fresh longer. I'd think they'd have some tips for other fruits and veggies also. On Behalf Of lovemyheavenly3 Monday, April 23, 2007 10:54 AM Are there any secrets to keeping produce fresh longer? Guest guest
FOR STORAGE OF LEAFY GREENS: Once we've rinsed (in GSE/water) our fresh greens (this works very well for ALL types of leafy green veggies) - we shake off the excess moisture and then " roll " them in a 100% cotton cloth (old diapers, linen sheets or towels work great as long as it's all cotton) before storing in the crisper in the frig. You'll find your greens will stay fresh and crisp much longer (approx. 10 days) than if stored in a plastic bag or in nothing. And, our preference is cotton linen diapers, they are soft, absorbent and work the best for storing leafy greens, from our experience... doc , " lovemyheavenly3 " <lovemyheavenly3 wrote: > > Are there any secrets to keeping produce fresh longer? Guest guest
LOL, I know what you mean! I have a small refrigerator upstairs, and it tends to freeze things... However, they do last longer when it does that. On another note, I have neverheard not to keep tomatoes in the fridge. Odd. -Alyssa On Behalf Of Lori Owens Monday, April 23, 2007 3:01 PM RE: Are there any secrets to keeping produce fresh longer?
