Hello all,

I just joined the group a couple days ago and am really enjoying it.

My family and I are new to the vegetarian lifestyle (less than a

week!), so any suggestions/encouragement is greatly appreciated.

We have always ate a lot of sandwiches (mainly at lunch), but I don't

want to use lunchmeat anymore--do you have any ideas for alternative

sandwich items? Keep in mind we have kids--ages 8 and under so nothing

too scary looking!=)

Thanks a lot,

Kristie

Hi Kristie!

In your produce section (where they have the tofu) you may be able to find

different vegetarian versions of lunchmeat - our Walmart Supercenter sells

Tofurkey lunchmeat. I've only tried the peppered turkey flavor myself, and

it was pretty good. I know ours also has a bologna. There are lots of

different kinds you can find, depending on where you live.

You can get veggie lunch " meats " and cheeses, also " hot

dogs " . One thing I have found extremely useful is pita.

You can dump allot of stuff in a pita that could not

go on regular sandwiches.

Welcome to the group :)

You can find vegetarian lunch " meats " in most produce

selections. They work well as meat subsitutes. Also, in

freezer sections yo can find vegetarian burgers, chicken

patties, bacon and lots of other stuff. Some brands to

look for are Boca, MorningstarFarms & LightLife (They are

the most available brands in Maine where I live, but there

are many others)

You can also try making sandwiches with just veggies.

My favorite combo is:

Sliced Cucumbers

Shredded Carrots

Sprouts (anykind)

Chopped Green Olives

Cream Cheese

Spicy Brown Mustard

Meat subs have been discussed befor on the group. You can

search past messages for more info.

You can also look in the groups files section for recipe

ideas, including some for kids :)

Hope this helps,

April

Hi Kristie!

We like to make " not tuna " sandwiches (the chickpea version - recipe is

in the file) or just plain veggie sandwiches (lettuce, cucumber,

tomatoes, sprouts, some cheese if you'd like). You can also make a

decent " not egg salad " sandwich - another recipe you'll find in the

files here. Do your kids like bananas? I like banana sandwiches (sliced

w buttery substance; Jim likes his bananas mashed with peanut butter).

I was never big on lunch meats in my " other " life so I tend not to

bother with the veggie cold cuts. Hope these suggestions help you out

some. Cyndy

Hi Kristie, I have 2 young children and they love the " fake " bacon. I

make them BLTs all the time. I also buy the fake lunchmeats that

everyone has mentioned and roll them up in Pillsbury Crescents. Even

when the cool they really like them so I will put them in their lunch

boxes. I will also take 1 slice of bread, 1 slice of fake lunchmeat and

a cheese stick, roll it tight for them and they eat it like a hot dog.

Hi Kristie,

Hooray that you & your family are eating healthier :) That's a great

gift to give each other. There's a folder in our files here full of

sandwich ideas:

%20Wraps/

Also a folder of kid-friendly ideas:

%2ARecipes/Kids%20Love%20Th\

Enjoy and please post any sandwich or lunch combos that you come up

with too :)

Peace,

Diane

Cyndy,

what is the name of the chickpea tuno recipe you use. I looked in the files

and there are several I would love to try one.

My kids love the banana and PB sandwiches, PB with coconut and granny smith

apples, they obviously love PB. They will even eat it with shredded carrots. My

husband likes Quorn roast thin sliced with BBQ, " Meatball " subs. As for myself I

live on the simpler side lettuce, tomato, cheese, avocado on a wheat bagel. Yum!

I make a sandwich spread whereby I substitute mashed canned (drained & rinsed)

chick peas for tuna and the rest of the recipe is just like making tuna salad.

This works on sandwich bread or in a pita.

My daughter is allergic to dairy and since I was -- thankfully --

forced to get over my cheese addiction I have since gone vegan.

One thing I enjoy making is the seitan recipe from " Vegan with a

Vengance. " I always slice up one chunk like " meatloaf " slices and make

sandwiches throughout the week on whole wheat bread with a slice of

Tofutti american or mozarella " cheese " , mustard, and Veganaise.

Mmmmmm, heaven!
