Guest guest
I have started buying organic babyfood for our eight month old, and for some reason it costs a LOT more! Do any of you make your own babyfood? I have always used store-bought (this is our fourth baby!), so I am clueless as to the time involved/storage, etc. Just thinking about it, it seems like it should be pretty simple--maybe just blend up whatever we're having for breakfast/lunch/dinner? Do things need to be cooked, or is raw fruit & vegatables okay? Any help or ideas appreciated! Kristie
Guest guest
Hi Kristie - I made my own baby good for both my boys (now 4 & 6 years old). A good book is " Super Baby Food " which is vegetarian. http://www.amazon.com/Super-Baby-Food-Ruth-Yaron/dp/0965260313/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/1\ 02-0304708-2330506?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1178553554 & sr=8-1 Some great choices for cereals are millet or oatmeal. Feel free to email me off-line if you have any specific questions. Guest guest
I used the store bought cereals for my kids, but after that I made my own baby food. Steaming and blending up veggies is easy enough and they store in the fridge for at least a week (I never made more in one session than what my LO could eat in a week). Fruit was easy too. I could either blend it up raw if it was soft or I would make my own applesauce by just cooking the apples in the skillet til they were soft enough to mash... nothing added. There are a few foods out there to avoid at that young age... eggs, nuts, honey, all are allergens and should be held off until the baby is one or two years old, depending on the product. Store bought carrots contain nitrogen and should not be given to babies... I know there's more, but it's been a year and a half since I had to think about this and another six months before I have to think about it again! I'll try to find you a comprehensive avoid list soon! By the time the kids were getting into more solid foods, I was just blending up what I had made for that meal for the rest of us, if necessary! Guest guest
Dear Kristie, I am not a mom of an infant, but am a grandmother to an 8 1/2 month old, plus I am his babysitter. Half the time my daughter forgets to send him any baby food, so what I do, is steam veges and them mash them up really well with a fork. Since my husband is a type 2 diabetic, I just can't go out and purchase commercially canned fruit for him that is canned in any type of sugar syrup. I am finding some that is canned in fruit juice, so I buy that. I take and mash those up with a fork really well for Justin (the baby) too, and I give him fresh banana. I want to try him on avocado too. I have a cookbook that I bought at the Adventist Book Center called " A Good Cook...TEN TALENTS Natural Foods Vegetarian Food-Combining Cookbook and Health Manual. " It is written by Frank J Hurd, D.C., M.D., and his wife Rosalie Hurd, B.S. It is a vegan cookbook, but does have some recipes in the back for those who are transitioning from a meat based diet to a vegan based diet. Anyway, it has a great chapter on Baby Foods. That is going to be my guide in the preparations of foods for my grandson. I am firmly convinced, and convicted that we all need to go back to the first diet that God gave us in the Bible. When I am on a vegan lifestyle/diet, I feel so much better, have more energy, and lose weight like crazy. And I don't seem to catch every little cold or bug that comes along. Sincerely, Karla Williams wife to Rick Mom to Jeremy age 29 born with Williams Syndrome and my forever little boy, Stacia, age 27, my beautiful daughter, Jameson age 23, my rascally other son, whom I adore, Grandma to: Dyllan age 9 1/2, Izabella age 6, and baby Justin age 8 1/2 months, the blessed lights of my life. Guest guest
I made my own babyfood when my kids were little. It is very easy. you can puree fruit in your blender or food processor, cook the veggies and then put them through the blender as well. As they get older you can start to just chop the food into small pieces instead of mashing.
