Guest guest
Denise, My country folk always called sweet potatoes sprinkled with brown sugar " candied yams " . Later I realized they were actually sweet potatoes . I was told recently that we seldom see real yams in the markets but what is offered are US grown sweet potatoes. This is still confusing to me. Guess I will research on line and see what I can find. Guest guest
In this order: Onions, potatoes, garlic, parsnips and carrots. I'm sure fennel is a root, I like it too. Fiona
Guest guest
Denise, First of all, let me say that I almost went into shock when I saw your question. These things are good! I don't have a clue how yams are made. Usually we buy the frozen ones that we don't have to add anything to. Whatever they do to them though gives the sweet potatoes a lot of flavor. If my grandmother was still alive, I am sure she could give me the recipe! However, when we have attempted to make them, we used brown sugar and maple syrup. They tasted alright, but they got kind of chewy if you let them sit too long before eating them. So we didn't do something right. -Alyssa On Behalf Of Denise Wednesday, May 16, 2007 5:40 AM Re: Question of the Week - May 13- May 19 - Favorite Root Veggies Dear Alyssa, Could you elaborate on what you mean when you say " sweet potatoes, preferably made into yams " Thanks, Denise the other one Alyssa RE: Question of the Week - May 13- May 19 - Favorite Root Veggies I love potatoes any way you can cook them! Guest guest
I like potatoes - baked, boiled, fried, mashed, roasted, in curries. Onions, in curries, grilled, roasted, raw - find red onions a bit too sharp though. Carrots, boiled, raw Parsnips, roasted, boiled peanuts - from shells, peanut butter, though I don't know how to make fresh peanut butter. Any recipes? Guest guest
To you all, there is a great difference between a yam and a sweet potato. We do not see yams in the US nor do we eat them. we only see sweet potatoes of various kinds...deep orange inside, light yellow inside, medium orange inside. Guest guest
I like to combine all the root veggies and roast them in the oven. Makes a great meal!
Guest guest
I'd have to vote for potatoes or sweet potatoes. Rutebega's and turnips are good, too. In fact, might be shorted to list non-favorite root veggies. :-)
