Guest guest
Not long after I became a vegetarian (almost 3 years ago), they published a report that said that the antibiotics that animals are fed are a big part of the problem with antibiotic resistant illnesses. The antibiotics work their way into the meat you eat and thus you are constantly getting a certain amount of them in your body. I'm sure that eventually they'll find that the growth hormones are doing the same things. I know that I feel better in some ways (I'm disabled w/ degenerative arthritis which will put me in a wheelchair eventually, plus fibromyalgia, kidney problems, liver problems, and several other issues too, including bizarre sudden allergic reactions to medications ranging from antibiotics to that rhabdomyalisis which is a rare side effect of statins for cholesterol). We do use meat substitutes in our meals, but not on an every day basis. I always have soy sausages, soy bacon, soy vegan burgers in the fridge, plus get soy crumbles fairly often because I have a 16 year old who is willing to be vegetarian at home as long as he can eat something that makes him feel like he's eating meat. We're starting to use more and more tofu - once every couple of weeks. But back to your question - I noticed a change in the way I *think* after cutting meat out. It was easier to think than when I had meat in my diet. I don't know why, but that was the one big change in my life at the time, so I think that has to be a part of it. You might consider changing the fish oil out for flaxseed oil supplements. I'm also allergic to iodine and all fish in any form has to be avoided, considering I almost died during a CT scan last year. Everything I've read has said that the flaxseed supplements will give you the added benefits as fish oil. Unfortunately, my doctor is older and doesn't have much info on vegetarian diets so he's not a big help there. I have to do my own research on what's good for me but I think it's made me much more aware of things to incorporate in my diet and what to avoid. And congratulations on getting your cholesterol down that well! Wish mine would drop more! On Behalf Of Norman Sussman Thursday, May 17, 2007 9:21 PM Touting the vegetarian life style. After 2 months on a [vegan] + [oily fish 2-3 times a week] diet, my total cholesterol dropped from 265 to 163 (without meds). That was two months ago. I expect the cholesterol to drop further. That got me to thinking that either humans are not designed to eat flesh, or perhaps the additives, antibiotics and hormones (and who knows what else) the poor captive animals have introduced into their bodies are harmful to humans. I don't have the desire to consume meat- like substitutes, or real meat either. What do you think? Norm

We have blunt teeth and a long intestinal tract which is more in keeping with herbivores than carnivores. Probably, we're omnivores like our apes, but we've placed too much focus on meat over the last 150 years or so and it's ruining our health and our planet. peace and blessings, ben
Guest guest
Donna/Norman Same here Donna. Congratulations Norman. I must agree with Donna , though, leave the fishes in the sea. Right now it is almost too polluted even for them. While my flesh eating friends and relatives continue with allergies, colds, flu , and pnemonia, I have had none. 'Diareaha seems to be the intestinal upset of the day. Everyone is complaining of it. I have never had the flu ever and my last cold was several years ago after taking a flight to Fl. Not genetic either as my meat eating relatives didn't fare so well. I must admit to a short term memory loss but hopefully that is just age related. 66 is such a great age. So if I have told you this same thing before, once or twice..Please forgive because I'll probably forget..again..LOL Sending Smiles and hugs your way Deanna in Colorado +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++- -- In , Donnalilacflower <thelilacflower wrote: > > Let the fish swim in the sea if you can. Guest guest
Norm, I agree with you about not eating meat. I have not eaten meat since last Oct. I made this choice because I have been on a quest to become as healthy as I can be. I was never truly unhealthy, yet there is heart disease, arthritis, cancer, lupus, fibromyalgia, etc. in my family. Also, reading The China Study truly opened my eyes to the fact that meat and dairy are not necessary and in fact, may be the cause of many diseases. I began to consider the idea that I did not want to end up disabled by disease like my mom and my sisters are, nor have multiple heart attacks like my late father did. I'm eating and exercising in a healthy way in hopes of preventing that. I have become mostly vegan. I have not eaten beef, poultry or pork at all, but I will occasionally eat something that has milk, eggs or cheese in it, especially in a social situation. For example, when there are work-related events where pizza is the only choice, I will eat some rather than make a fuss. Sometimes I will eat some birthday cake or something like that, but I have not directly eaten eggs or drank milk. When we are forced to dine out, I will either get a large salad or maybe some shrimp, but this is very rare. I lost the desire to eat meat and dairy products within a very short time, probably a week or two after giving it up. When my hubby cooks a beef roast, it no longer smells good to me. It sort of grosses me out now. I used to drink a lot of milk, but now it does not even appeal to me, which is odd because I drank it daily for decades. If you had told me a year ago that I would change this much, I never would have believed you. My cravings now center on fruits, veggies and whole grains. I don't want anything to do with fast food, nor even most restaurant food. It simply isn't as healthy, nor as fresh, in most cases. I suppose if I could eat at an upscale vegetarian restaurant, then I might be happy with it. The guys that I work with have become my test market for vegan foods. They will try anything that I make and often they like it very much and will come back for seconds. One of them just asked me when I am going to make " that rice thing " again. Maybe I will convert them yet! Mary in MI
