Guest guest
That's great. If you use egg whites and toss the yolks and cut way back on dairy it will get even lower. I'm not vegan but I don't eat eggs, I use eggs when I bake and I eat small amounts of butter on my food. I have cow's milk allergy so I use almost no dairy. I get away with a little parmesan cheese now and then or a sprinkle of grated cheddar and that's about all I use. My cholesterol stays between 130 - 150 Donna --- messy_boys <messy_boys wrote: > One of the reasons I went vegetarian was to > hopefully lower my > cholesterol. Guest guest
That is so great, Kristie! My cholesterol was 280 in January and I went vegan. (I had been ovo lacto for 30 years.) After 3 months, it was 199, with no medication. My good cholesterol still needs to be higher and I'm working on it, and I want my overall cholesterol to be below 150. I will get it checked again in mid July. (The reason 150 is a magic number is that the Framingham Heart studies show that the risk of a heart attack is close to zero when cholesterol is below 150. Of course there are other factors and you might find it interesting to take a CHD Risk Prediction score sheet here: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/about/framingham/ My risk last January was 20% and it is now 7%.) Guest guest
I am vegetarian, not vegan, but I only eat milk products and eggs if they are cooked into something like break or cake. Basically, I eat very little dairy and eggs. My cholesterol fell dramatically when I became vegetarian and after 60 days my doctor took me off my cholesterol meds. A year later, when I next had it checked it was way back up again. Our bodies make cholesterol and any time my body gets the ingredients it makes cholesterol. Even though I don't have the risk factors of being overweight and smoking, my arteries are in terrible shape because my body just makes it. Don't get your number down and stop checking it and think it is going to stay down. It may not. Katie Sharon Zakhour <sharon.zakhour wrote: That is so great, Kristie! Guest guest
Katie, I am at that point right now, and am trying to lose weight and get my cholesterol down....that is why I have been checking into this diet. Anyway, what happened to you is exactly what one of my friends said is so typical. Even if you get it down, it goes right back up again. Do you take fish oil supplements or flax seed oil? Or even garlic?? I am wondering if any of those things help or it is not worth my while. I will keep trying, and checking. If I end up on meds, I will know that I did my best, and will take the meds necessary. -Sue --- Katie M <cozycate wrote: > I am vegetarian, not vegan, but I only eat milk > products and eggs if they are cooked into something > like break or cake. Guest guest
All the doctors, from my gp to the cardiologist and vascular sugeron say that fish oil will add years to your life. Most agree that garlic is a good thing. They told me to quit taking the vitimin E, though. It is ok on the skin or hair, but not to take intennally. Katie " susan m. Guest guest
If you do some research on cholesterol you will find it is not the bad thing that the traditional health people would like you to think it is:) It is truly not an issue at all. My cholesterol overall is 123 and I eat eggs all the time, use only coconut oil, real butter or olive oil. But honestly it is not a health issue like they would have us believe - just another reason, it seems, to push meds. Belinda
