I am trying to find a natural bug repellent for camping. We have tried dozens of

them and nothing works for the mosquito's and black flies here in June. Any body

know of one that is effective?

Burt's Bees makes one out of essential oils. I find it works well, but you

need to put it on as you get dressed because the oils doesn't do well with

clothes.

I make my own bug spray and it works better for me than anything I've ever

purchased.

1 cup grain alcohol or vodka

50 drops tea tree essential oil

50 drops lavender essential oil

25 drops rosemary essential oil

25 drops lemon essential oil

You can use any combination of the essential oils and even omit one if you don't

like it. I've found that the tea tree and lavender work best, so I always use

those. The alcohol evaporates quickly, so you can smell it for only a few

minutes. I do find I need to reapply this every couple hours, but I keep it in

a spray bottle and spritzing takes only a few seconds.

I know some people use the peppermint Dr Bronner's Magic soap at a campground

I'm at all summer long. Apparently the peppermint keeps the flies away. I

don't use Dr Bronners, so I cannot say from personal experience.

I use lavender and tea tree essential oils mixed together with better success

than any commercial product I've ever tried. It smells a like a forrest and has

to be re-applied about as often as the commercial sprays.

We use a combination of a few drops (7-8) each cedar oil, citronella

oil and lemon oil diluted in a cup or so of water in a spray bottle

works very well for us here and the flying bugs are really bad this

season with all the rain - this may work for you. doc

peppermint is effective, I 've had to keep reapplying it though. I

also like Herbal Armour spray (I think it's available at Wild OAts, etc)

Please be very careful with pennyroyal - it is poisonious to pets and cause

pregnant women to mis-carry.
