Guest guest
People go back and forth all the time from meat to no meat. Yeeeeears ago, when I found it hard to maintain a veg diet and be sociable, I went back to limited meat eating for about a year. Meat definitely " slows you down " , especially if you aren't eating the same amount of fiber (since your calories are now concentrated on meat as the centerpiece of a meal.) Your daughter should ask for the proof of this information. Almost everything that non-vegetarians non-experts believe about the necessity of meat is a myth. Your daughter needs to see at least 10 good studies from reputable sources on this subject. A reputable source is not the Hog Council or Beef Producers of America or Milk for Life or whatever. Universities are often good at reputable studies. Someone just posted Neal Barnard's group web address (Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine?)--his group has been fairly helpful at studies teasing out the health benefits of being veg/vegan. You need to read his stuff with an eye to his bias also (which is my bias also), but he IS a scientist, not just a guy with Doctor in front of his name. _http://www.pcrm.org_ (http://www.pcrm.org) When people make brash contentions like someone did to your daughter, always ask for proof. When you read soemthing on a web site, check to see the person's credentials and look for the proof of what the blogger is saying: what is the study, who did it, how many other studies came to the same conclusion and who sponsored the studies; if you don't know the name of the sponsor, dig a little further--drug manufacturers and other manufacturers do a tremendous amount of flawed/biased research and sometimes it's not immediately clear who gave the $$ for a study. Also, things like vegetarian diets truly require long-term studies; you will not get much information about health benefits in studying vegetarians vs non-vegetarians for 2 years (unless some short-term benefit or side effect turns up); these things take tons of time and $$; and there isn't a tremendous amount of grant money out there for long-term studies. People make up the weirdest stuff all the time; check their facts. (I'm a critical care hospital nurse--believe me, people say the darnedest things!) Guest guest
I'm not a doc but this makes no sense to me. See if you can find a diagnosis for us. Guest guest
I have been searching the web, but can't find anything that says she won't be able to digest meat. I'm not a doctor either, but it just doesn't make sense--it sounds more like an old wives tale. Did this come from a reputable source? If so, ask them for back-up info. Otherwise, I would ignore them. Guest guest
<< I have been searching the web, but can't find anything that says she won't be able to digest meat. >> No documentation, perhaps, but an experience many vegetarians share. If I eat something with meat hidden in it, like the broccoli casserole at the company potluck, I get a rush of stomach acid that makes me feel ill. Then the offending item never digests. It comes back up a couple of hours later. The story behing the broccoli casserole? An evil woman at work wanted to " trick " me into eating meat. She told me she had been careful not to use anything with meat in it so I could have some. She admitted (after I vomitted in her wastepaper basket) that she had used some cream of chicken soup in it. I asked her about the ingredients again after I had taken a couple of bites. She assured me it was meatless, but my stomach acid told me otherwise. I stopped eating it, and anything else, and then had to contend with the woman complaining about me wasting a whole plate of food. Did I vomit because of what was in my mind or because of what was in my stomach? -- Kat_Doyle (@earthlink.net)
Guest guest
For Mother's Day my husband took us out for pizza and we had a vegetarian pizza and bread sticks. I got really bad heart burn from it. I couldnt understand why. It is unusual for me to get heart burn. Then next day when we were finishing up the leftovers I found a huge chunk of meat in the bottom of the pizza sauce that we were dipping the breadsticks in. They put meat in the sauce! I was so disgusted, and figure that is why I got heart burn because I have not eaten meat in over a year. I did not have any preconsieved ideas about what meat might do to me because I just assumed that it was a regular tomato sauce on our pizza. I was miserable for a couple of days because of it. I have a 10 year old daughter who doesnt eat any meat for weeks on end and she is growing up healthy. My 5 year old daughter doesnt eat meat either and hasnt for over a year and she is very healthy and has no problems. It is the meat industry that has everyone brainwashed into thinking that we just have to eat flesh food to get protein. Some of the strongest animals in the world are vegetarians, so explain to me how if we have to have flesh foods to build muscle tissue then why are they so strong, never eating meat? Ugh! If someone wants to eat meat then that is fine, they have the right to chose but to say such crap is so irritating. Cherie Don't get soaked.
