Here is my question for a group - do you lose weight when you switch to

Thanks,

It really depends on your food choices. Statistically vegetarians are

leaner than carnivores, but if one consumes too many calories one will be

overweight no matter where those calories are coming from. There's an awful

lot of

junk you can still eat being veg that will pack on the pounds. To lose weight

you have to think along the lines of fruit, veggies, beans, whole grains,

nuts (sparingly), low fat dairy if you eat dairy and an occasional treat. If

you eat like this, yes, you will lose weight.

That depends on what you eat. Following vegetarian can lend itself to

weight loss, but you can't be eating all the desserts and expect to lose

weight.

This comes up a lot, EB, and the answer is... maybe.

There are LOTS of fat vegetarians around -- I was one for many years.

You can be a fat vegetarian or a fat vegan. You can be a thin

omnivore. It's more about the type and quantity of food that you eat

(and probably genetics as well) rather than whether it contains animal

products.

I lost a steady 1/2 lb a week, resulting in 25 lb lost. I eat 3 meals

a day, all good portion sizes. Desert is normally fruit, but I do

make a cake for Hubbie once a week, and have a slice, about 1/8 of a

8 inch cake. (olive oil cake).

I do exercise, walking, yoga and weights, so that may have helped.

I believe that I eat better now, and it certainly fuels long walks.

I hope your journey into vegetarianism will be enjoyable!

Well, you can make a fairly healthy version of mashed potatoes or potato

salad too! My ex broke my jaw once during an argument - he brought his

elbow up as I was moving past him and BAM! - so with my arthritis I

sometimes eat a lot of things like this to minimize chewing. You can use

the low fat butter, and fat free milk, or one of my favorites, stir in some

fat free plain yogurt. And to make the potato salad healthier, use fat free

mayonnaise instead of regular. And cubed potatoes instead of mashed and

then the only fat in it is if you put chopped up boiled egg. As far as the

mashed potatoes go, the only fat there comes from the butter so they aren't

as unhealthy as what our moms used to make!
