I was just reading Christiane Britton's blog, 28 cooks:

http://28cooks.blogspot.com/

And I learned a new term!! She calls herself a " vegaquarian " . Well, I

suspected what that might mean but, to be sure, I googled it.

A vegaquarian is a vegetarian or vegan that eats fish. In fact, I went

to vegaquarian.net and it says:

grains + legumes + fruit + vegetables + fish - meat = vegaquarian

Which doesn't specify whether dairy is allowed in this definition.

So, how is this different than a Pescatarian? Anyone know? I'm

wondering if a vegaquarian might be a vegan who eats fish, where a

pescatarian is a vegetarian who eats fish.

According to Wikipedia, they are synonymous:

Several other variations are also given.

I dont understand how people who eat animal products of any kind can

be referred to as VEGAN. Fish is meat! The filets that people eat

are muscle tissue of the fish, to me its no different than eating a

steak. I dont really even feel that people who eat fish should

consider themselves vegetarian, this is my opinion of course and

dont mean to offend anyone. Our family is lacto-ovo vegetarian. We

still use some eggs and cheese, but are slowly cutting those things

out too. A true vegan diet does not contain any animal products,

meat, butter, dairy, eggs, seafood, etc. Ok enough ranting from me.

If they are still eating seafood they are a

pescatarian. Seafood is sometimes the last a

vegetarian gives up. If a person has given up beef,

poultry and pork they have come a long way in the

vegetarian path and usually seafood will come next.

As odd as it sounds, many vegetarian cookbooks have

seafood recipes in them.

I guess that doesn't sound so weird to me. I have known many people who

don't really consider fish to be meat. Heck, the Catholic Church kinda

set that mindset up years ago on meatless Fridays when everyone ate

fish. :-)

Now, I gave up seafood YEARS before I gave up meat. It disgusted me

from a very young age - probably around 6 or 7. Heck, I'm such a weenie

that I don't like the _name_ Mock Crab Cakes for that wonderful

wonderful WONDERFUL Zucchini Patty recipe in our files. Have you tried

THOSE yet, Maureen? SO GOOD! :-) (I sometimes call them Crabby

Patties, a la Sponge Bob.)

(Look in the zucchini folder and you'll find them. I plan to make them

tonight, but I would love to know if they can be made in a less

fattening way than deep fried.) I have some homemade hamburger buns in

the freezer and I'm also making some (partial) whole wheat hot dog buns

right now. It's summertime and the kids want their buns! :-)
