Guest guest
We had an enjoyable stir fry this evening. It was served over brown rice. We cooked the rice in our B & D rice cooker--it's one of those gadgets where one puts rice and liquid in a small plastc container inside a steamer, and the steamer does the rest. For the liquid on this batch of rice, we chose to use mint suntea. Heretofore, I've considered brown rice an abomination, lke oatmeal and other gummy things that are supposed to be good for you. I've always felt that eating them was noy unlike taking a vow of abstinence or donning a hair shirt. But much to my surprise, this brown rice was not only edible, but quite delicious. Guest guest
Brown rice is, indeed, delicious. You might try the toasted oatmeal that was on the list a couple of days ago. Talk about a different taste in oatmeal!!! It is delicious, too!! Guest guest
Mint tea?!?! Cool! I can't even imagine how that tastes. :-) You know, for years and years I had a cheap rice cooker that didn't work with brown rice. (It would come out crunchy.) Then, because of someone on this board whose name I can't remember, I bought a Zojirushi Fuzzy Logic rice cooker. It can cook any style of rice, including Gaba Brown. YUM! It makes the most delicious brown rice! It's pricey but I use it twice a week and it has my kids eating brown rice for a change. I sometimes start it before bed (the Gaba setting takes about 5 hours) and there is perfect rice ready in the morning that stays fresh for days in that thing. (After a couple days I'll throw out any leftovers.) And it doesn't get the kitchen hot, either. :-) Sharon james singer wrote: > We had an enjoyable stir fry this evening. Guest guest
Everytime I've tried brown rice I've not liked the texture of it. Perhaps I just didn't have a good brand and it was still too processed or something. I'd not think about doing rice liquid with things like tea. I've done stock before but not tea. I was looking at rice cookers this morning but didn't buy electric ones. Instead I bought a microwave one. I had one of those before but when I split from hubby, he kept it. Reading all these great recipes is making me hungry so I think it's time to head to the kitchen. Bonni james singer <islandjim1 wrote: We had an enjoyable stir fry this evening. Guest guest
Now I love to drink Mint Ice Tea, but would have NEVER thought to use it as the water to make the rice in. Thanks for the heads up on this James. Judy - Sharon Zakhour Thursday, June 28, 2007 5:55 PM Re: Stir Fry, Part One Mint tea?!?! Cool! Guest guest
If you aren't liking the texture of your brown rice, you may not be cooking it long enough. Guest guest
When you pre-soak the brown rice overnight (the Gaba technique) it comes out soft, moist and delicious! You certainly don't need a special rice cooker for this, but that makes it quite easy. (Evidently the Gaba brown setting on the rice cooker isn't considered a sufficient soak by true purists, but it makes the rice soft and moist.) Guest guest
next time i buy rice, i might try long grain brown rice again. I just had some white rice with brown sugar on top. I wanted rice after typing all this but also wanted something sweet. Not probably good for losing weight but it was GOOOOOD. Guest guest
Or you may be putting to much water in it and cooking it too long. The first time I made it it came out as brown mush. I use 2 1/2 cups of water or broth per cup of brown rice. Katie Marilyn Daub <mcdaub wrote: If you aren't liking the texture of your brown rice, you may not be cooking it long enough. Guest guest
<< You know, for years and years I had a cheap rice cooker that didn't work with brown rice. >> The secret to cooking brown rice in the dime-store rice cooker is to mix the water and rice then let it sit for 30 minutes before turning on the cooker. Soaking before cooking allows the rice to cook properly in the short time allowed by the cooker. -- Kat_Doyle (@earthlink.net)
