I thought they were horrible. The sauce is sickeningly sweet and there's too much of it. I didn't really care for the texture either. Let's just say that this is one product that will not fool a meat eater. Just my HO. TM ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Well the 4th of July is coming. Yeah America! This holiday above all holidays is difficult for my Southern born husband. He desperately wants meat especially ribs. He says grilling with the 'Fake " stuff is not grilling since it only takes minutes he loves to baby it for hours. So anyhow after he refuse to go somewhere to eat the real deal (by himself mind you) I suggested we try the fake ribs. So I thought I would ask everyone if they have tried them and which one is good. The ones I saw were $5 a box so I need your opinions before I go out and spend $20 on them. Steph Get your own web address. Have a HUGE year through Small Business. Guest guest
Hi Steph, Here's a suggestion for you and your hubby: make the " ribs " yourself. You can try this a couple of different ways. The first method is to either find an excellent seitan recipe that makes lovely moist seitan that pulls apart easily, or you can buy cans of mock duck or mock chicken from an asian grocer. Prepare your favourite bbq sauce, or use a store bought (I like Diana Sauce - yummmmm!). Smoke the seitan strips on the bbq. To do this you'll need some fruit-wood (apple, cherry, something like that) or untreated cedar chips and a fruit-wood or untreated cedar plank that have soaked for an hour or two, and a foil pie plate. We have a gas bbq with two burners and this is what I do: turn one burner on low heat; put the soaked wood chips in the foil pie plate on the hot burner; put the cedar plank over the cold burner; put your seitan strips on the cold burner; close the lid of the bbq. This is where you'll have to play with timing. The seitan will absorb the smoke easily. If you use mock chicken or duck, the seitan is really moist, so you have to be careful that it doesn't dry out too much. I'd say smoke them for 20 minutes (lid closed) and check for moisture. When they start to get a little drier, slather your " ribs " generously in bbq sauce. Turn up the heat to medium at this point. Close the lid again for 10 minutes and check for the thickening of the sauce. It should start to get a little sticky. This may take a while, so check on them every 10-15 minutes. The other method is to use extra-firm tofu, but I would freeze it overnight then thaw it (do not drain) first, tear it into riblettes, and then smoke it and baste it. The tofu will cook quicker, but you won't get that same rib texture you will get from the seitan. Another option is to marinate your riblettes using your favourite marinade, instead of smoking them. You'll still need the cedar plank or a veggie basket to cook them on the bbq though. But you can turn both burners on. Just leave them on a low setting. I hope that helps. Happy July 4th! It's Canada Day for us on July 1st. I have no idea what I'll be making... maybe " ribs " Cheers! Guest guest
I personally haven't tried the riblets, but I know lots of folks that have and LOVE them. Hopefully that will be the case with your hubby and you. Judy - Steph vegetarian group Friday, June 29, 2007 7:06 AM Fake ribs Well the 4th of July is coming. Yeah America! Guest guest
I tried the morningstar ones and did not like them. The sauce was salty and not tasty to me (I'm picky about my bbq sauce - I like hot & barely sweet & none of that fake chemical-y smoke taste). Also the ribs were a little mushy to me, not at all a satisfying sub for a real rib that you can gnaw on. They would probably make an ok rib sandwich but as themselves, I was disappointed. Perhaps you might try one box before you buy a whole bunch, just to see, as they are a bit pricy. hth, Peace, Diane , Steph <mrswalp29 wrote: > > Well the 4th of July is coming. Yeah America! Guest guest
I don't think the gardenburger would satisfy your hubby's need to grill... they heat up in the microwave pretty quickly.. I've never grilled them.. and there are only TWO in each box. I've bought them at Trader Joes much cheaper than $5.. but still it's a pricey substitute... we used to get them with coupons and on sale... and like I said before, I'd get them cuz they made my dad happy. we had them recently, and my hubby and kids liked them, I thought they weren't as good as I had remembered them... but prego hormones do make my tastebuds different... they are very sweet. I'm no help! LOL>>> Not having ever been a big rib eater and now haveing been veg for so long! sorry.. j , " wwjd " <jtwigg wrote: > > I personally haven't tried the riblets, but I know lots of folks that have and LOVE them. Guest guest
if you are referring to the gardenburger riblets(?), they are a staple in our house! my husband absolutely LOVES them. we have been eating them for a few years now and he STILL looks at the box, can't believe they are " fake " . it's wonderfuld when we are out and all the bbq places get that craving going when I smell the goodies in the air...I can go home and pop these in the micro and satisfy the bbq craving....yes, I am southern born and bred and these are GOOD!!! Guest guest
I hate to say this but a me*t lover won't like any fake ribs!! But my family members who eats me*t don't force their views on the family members who don't and vice-versa (our family is about a 50-50 ratio) and we would never expect to change each others views or force one side or the other to eat alone because of their choices. That just isn't right!! You're family and holidays should be a time to gather and be happy - no matter who eats what!! He isn't going to force you to eat the ribs with him is he? As long as he purchases and cooks them himself....
Guest guest
I like these so much I could eat them 2 meals a day for the next year. I eat in sandwiches, on top of rice, with mashed potatoes, even with a salad. Compared to real me*t I don't think they are highly priced and they sure the heck are better for you. Guest guest
Gardenburger Riblets RULE!!!! I've had a lot of meat-eaters enjoy them, also. Even my granddaughters....and one is extremely picky about her food....love these and call this " a special Grandma dinner " ! Look for them on sale....at least here I always find them 2/$5 and many times I have coupons. Sometimes there are pull-off coupons on the boxes. Guest guest
Angel, I asked my husband to go out to like Chili's to eat the ribs but he got offended after reading Mad Cowboy my southern man is vegetarian!! I love him so. Just some tastes he misses. Personally I think he just misses slow cooking foods for hours he loves his grill and corn doesn't give him the same pleasure.
