Guest guest
Just last week I pulled a pile of week old expired alternative products off the Whole Foods shelf and took to the manager. Shame on that store to let the help push the old in the front and stock all the good dates behind. Since they opened the largest Whole Foods ever 2 miles from me the other 3 stores have to suffer and train new help, all the experienced employees have gone to the new mega store. I'm an expiration date fiend. I do this with everything at ther various stores. Donna --- Katie M <cozycate wrote: > You really need to watch the 'use by' dates on those > boxes of greens, though. Actually Donna, that *is* the correct method for stocking groceries, so that the oldest products gets used while it is still good. It was called FIFO in the store I worked in as a kid- " First In, First Out " . If the stockers had their way, they'd just put the new stuff in front, which is easier and faster for them. The store manager did drop the ball, however, by having expired stuff on the shelves. That is slipshod. NIF
Guest guest
Having worked in the Health Food Industry for several years, I learned a trick which I will now pass on to all of you... Stockers are trained to rotate the food on the shelf and put the new stock in the back so the old stuff will sell first..... Well, what I do is go to the back of the row and buy the newest. There's no rule of grocery shopping that says you must buy the first one on the shelf. Check out the dates... if the date is longer in the back.... get that one! I learned long ago that only I can look out for the dates... the folks who work in the grocery stores certainly don't care about whether or not I buy food that is expired. So check the dates yourself! Grocery stores will generally oblige our requests for new products but we must get out of our comfort zone and ASK FOR IT! The grocers don't know we want the products they don't have unless we tell them. For example, our local grocery store didn't carry any " Smart Ground " by Lightlife but I had seen in it other stores in the chain, so I asked for it, and they brought it in. Then, of course, while I was buying some I had to tell everyone there how great it is for tacos, sloppy joes, enchiladas..... Perhaps they will try it too! Anyway, if you want something that your grocery store doesn't offer.... ASK FOR IT! Life is not measured by how many breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Guest guest
Milli, This is very good advise. I do it all the time. Sale items often have few days to experation date so must be used first. My mother once worked in a grocery store and the stories she told me are disheartening. I hope some things have changed. I believe some merchandise is now given to homeless shelters.
