what is a bitter melon, it's an ugly wrinkled up vegetable, why is it

called bitter? Do you peel it, add sugar, eat it raw?

I agree, what is bitter melon? It looks like a dinosaur cucumber to

me.

I've never tasted one before.

Is that the wrinkled up thing they call an " ugly fruit " ? I have tasted one of

those.

I've had it curried. In Sri Lanka they make a dry curry with potato,

bitter melon & cabbage. The melon is very bitter but not a nasty

bitter, more sort of bracing and stringent. I found these recipes at

RecipeZaar but have not tried any. I had forgotten all about bitter

melon; I wonder if I can find any in Seattle :)

I buy bitter melon at the Asian farmer's market here in San Francisco.

It's very bitter. So far I've only juiced it. It's great for diabetics.

 

I'll have to check out those recipes, Diane!
