You will enjoy being in this group. Many of us have blended families

and it works. Just do recipes day to day. Offer the non-vegetarians

some of what you make for yourself. They will eat more and more of

what you are preparing. Don't expect miracles overnight though.

it's something that's been in my heart for a very long time and i'm

so excited about this new venture. i have 2 girls ages 6 and 8 and a

husband who is not veg. my husband says he totally supports my

choice in doing this and he feels it will be positive for our

children too. my children have asked if i'll still be making some of

their favorite meat dishes, i don't want to drastically change their

worlds just because i've decided to change mine, so i guess what i'm

asking is do any of you live w/ non vegetarians, and if so, how do

you handle it??

this all seems very overwhelming at once. i think it would be

interesting to get a basic understanding of a vegetarians daily food

plan, e.g. breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas. i'm looking forward to

hearing from you and very proud to be eating in a much healthier

fashion. thanks, jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I'm only a few months into this new life change myself and have a

blended family. Check out your library for some books or visit the

book store. Has helped me alot because I was not sure if I needed to

strive for a certain balance or what to do.

As for my DH and children (8 and 12) - they are LOVING most of my

recipes and many of the meat substitutes. They mostly eat what I eat

at home but not vegan with them and I do allow them some exceptions a

few times each week. Tonight my DH is out of town so I fed the kids

a frozen stir fry with shrimp that they always enjoyed but I had a

different meal from veggie leftovers.

Cheese pizza, ravioli (found some great butternut squash frozen

ones!), bean enchilidas, pastas and sauces with fresh veggies - raw

or cooked. Just browse these recipes - some really great sounding

dishes are listed. Peanut butter sandwiches..... all things the

kids liked before. Newest fav - spicy bean burgers - LOVE them!

Again, I do allow the kids some exceptions for now but am amazed that

they are handling this so well. In part because there are so many

great recipes and products on the shelves these days. Just great

food! Hope your family adjusts well also. Let us know.

There actually is a book called Vegetarianism for Dummies. You could

probably find it in the cookbook section of your local bookstore. When my

friend's husband decided to become a vegetarian, I recommended it to her -

it's covers the basics of what kind of things you need to eat. He's used it

a lot!

I suggest you check out the salvation army thrift stores and second hand stores.

Lots of people buy the best in books and then don't follow through and never use

them. That was where I got almost all of mine. I got Crescent Dragonwagon's

Passionate Vegetarian fr $1.50.

I suggest before buying a cookbook you check out the library. That is what

I did when I first went veg.

Some cookbooks I really liked and some I didn't.

Every one of my many recipe, canning, herbal and craft books are from

the thrift store ARC. I have never paid more than $3 for any one of

these beautiful once expensive books. Some I have traded and others

given away. Several I use almost daily.

In the begining I checked out library books but soon discovered the

thrift stores. I also found a beautifully illustrated book of crochet

afghans for my mother. She has made several of the patterns. I also

buy most if not all of my kitchen things. My 3 pieces of Pampered

Chef are some of my favorites. $4 ea.

I collect antique kitchen tools and porcelain pans. Found all of

these treasures at thrift stores or yard sales.

Way too much fun.

Sending smiles and hugs your way
