Guest guest
ok..let me reword it its generally vegan in the US can't speak for anywhere else from VRG What about those ingredients that sound like they are from milk, such as lactic acid, lactose, and lactate? If it's lactate or lactic acid, it's not from dairy (exception - sterol lactate due to the stearic acid). " Lac " ingredients are usually produced by a fermentation process using cornstarch or beet sugar. Lactose is always from dairy. Most ingredients made with with calcium are vegan (i.e. calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate). The exceptions are calcium caseinate and calcium stearate. Drink up the calcium fortified o.j. - it's vegan! >ohjoy68 <ohjoy68 >May 10, 2007 1:41 PM > > Question please > >Calcium Phosphate.....is it made from animal bones? Guest guest
Ok, I've been slowly adapting to a vegetarian lifestyle, although I still eat dairy, eggs and seafood, tonite my husband thought I should eat some meat because my iron levels are waaaay down, lots of bruising, pale, etc. * I've not eaten any meat in over six weeks now* So I took 2 bites of a grilled pork steak, and I've been hurling all evening. Is this a normal reaction after not eating meat in a long while? I feel like I swallowed a brick or two. Has anyone else had this reaction when falling off the veggie wagon? With it being just me, it's been hard to fix meals for just one person, and I'm afraid I've been eating mostly cottage cheese, salads, fresh tomatoes from my garden, Boca burgers and I'm experimenting with tofu. I'm going to try halving some of the group recipes and see if the other portion either freezes or I guess it can be lunch the next day. Guest guest
No, that is not normal. You are probably way low on iron, bruising and pale because you are sick. Don't give up being a vegetarian because you have the flu. Guest guest
Marcia, I've been doing stir fry vegetables with tofu and it freezes well. I cut the tofu into strips and cook them in a wok with onion and garlic. What are Boca burgers??? Regards, Harry > from my garden, Boca burgers and I'm experimenting with tofu. Guest guest
Boca Burgers are veggie burgers you can find in your freezer section. They've got a lot of varieties, but my son and I prefer the vegan original one. We microwave them for about a minute each, then put them in a skillet and add just a dash of liquid smoke and they're very good. Here's their website: http://www.bocafoods.com/index.aspx. They've got lots of different products from fake chicken patties and nuggets to burgers to sausages. Guest guest
Thankyou, Our selection of ready made burgers is very limited. The supermarkets don't have them ... the only ones I have found are in Asian shops in the fruit and veg market and I didn't like those at all so I am making my own. I have been making vege burgers using TVP and so far I have the texture right but the flavour is not quite right. My next experiment is to fry onion and garlic till it is almost liquid and add that to the burger mix. Guest guest
Harry, We have some excellent 'burger'recipes in the files. My favorite way to make them is with oatmeal, mushrooms, garlic and onion powder. The mushrooms give the texture you want. You can make dozens for the price of the store bought. I also use sage in mine if I want a 'sausage' flavor. I'm heavily anemic, but I've been veggie for about 3 months now (with dairy and eggs), and I'm doing okay. I'm careful to balance my meals, and I also take a good multi-vitamin with extra iron. I've found that the plain iron tablets upset my stomach, though, so I avoid those. You can do it! Don't give up! *S* NIF
Guest guest
I have had anemia most of my life, so I know being veggie has nothing to do with it. The doctor has me on 325 mg of iron 3x a day but after last labs I think he's gonna put me on the shots intead. Oh don't worry about me giving up, My brain feels I've not had a meal cause there is no meat, but it loved all the side dishes lol... But my stomach feels much better without the meat, plus I've lost a lot of weight in the past six weeks. Marcia
Guest guest
Hi~ I rarely post, mainly a lurker but enjoy reading and trying all the yummy recipies! I have been veg for about 15 years, had 2 healthy babies on my veg diet, and on ocassion still get low on my iron. I have found a wonderful iron supplement you may want to try. It is liquid so easily absorbed. I have never had any problems while taking this, and it tastes great. It is called FLORIDIX and I get it at Wild Oats/Whole Foods and Wharehouse Vitamins. It is a bit pricey, but I find it is worth it and I just take it when I am feeling low energy, so it is not an every day thing for. Check it out the next time you are in a Natural health Food store, they are sure to have it--it comes in big bottles that are in a box on the shelf. HTH, Patty Shape in your own image. Guest guest
The Doctor I work for says the pills are dangerous and the shots are worse. Guest guest
Really? What does he suggest for pernicious anemia? I've always been anemic but since losing all my thyroid and parathyroid glands 4 years ago, it's been even worse.
