Guest guest
My 16 month old granddaughter just seems to attract mosquitos like crazy. We've been using a version of Off that is safe for children her age, but it isn't working very well. My daughter wanted me to ask if there was something that my granddaughter could maybe eat that would help deter the mosquitos. This child eats anything and everything, so pickiness isn't a problem. Anyone have any ideas???
Guest guest
Not exactly natural but it does work: Skin-So-Soft from Avon. (not edible either ) but it does work. Smells kinda nice too. hth, Diane , " Penny " <pennyfrench wrote: > > > > My 16 month old granddaughter just seems to attract mosquitos like crazy. > We've been using a version of Off that is safe for children her age, but it > isn't working very well. Guest guest
Living in Alaska, as I do, I am an expert on mosquitos. Mosquitos are attracted by carbon dioxide, a by-product of breathing. They can folllow a trail for miles in calm air. Given a choice of many people, they will invariably land and try to lunch on someone with type B blood and if they can find a B negative, they will choose that over any other. There is really nothinng you can put on a child that will protect her, but " off " probably works as well as anything. Any kind of perfume, even the stuff in kids shampoo or baby lotion also attracts mosquitos. If you choose, you can spray her clothing with regular " off " before she gets dressed and then just spray her skin in exposed areas. Guest guest
The mosquito repellent action of skin so soft is formaldihyde, not something I would want to put on a child. Guest guest
Yikes, really? I never realized that formaldihyde was in it. Guest guest
http://www.13wmaz.com/news/top_story.aspx?storyid=41370 They have suggestion at the end of this article. One is Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Here is more info about it. http://www.picaridin.info/lemon-eucalyptus.htm This article has a good chart showing it's effectivness compared to other insect repellant on the market. I bet you could find that for sale on the internet, if your local health food store doesn't carry it. Guest guest
Actually it's BHT, an ingredient in embalming fluid, not formaldehyde, but still, ick! Guest guest
Penny Part of the problem is sugar in the bloodstream. Also eat more foods with B vitamins. I said part of the problem since genetics and other factors make a difference. The lack of pickiness sounds like part of the problem so it sounds like the child eats a fair amount of junk food. I would suggest garlic to an adult but not to a child. Eat more herbs like basil, mint, oregano, and definitely greens. Guest guest
Surprisingly enough, she doesn't eat much junk food. When she's given something with a lot of sugar in it, she won't eat it very well. But hand her fresh fruit, particularly blueberries, and she just does crazy! It drives her parents kind of crazy because they don't eat too many different foods, but Faith will eat anything she sees me eat. Not too many kids her age love asparagus or broccoli, but she will throw a fit if she sees someone else eating it without her! Guest guest
Sounds like she is doing well on that diet. Just add a few herbs. Personally, I just use a mix of essential oils that I buy commercially. I live in Alaska and the mosquito is the state bird. We have lots. In the spring, we have some 3/4 " in length. Guest guest
A friend just told me that she mixes eucalyptus and lemon essential oils, in an oil base for insect repellent, she said it works better than deet. I thought I would try making it with coconut oil. Cover up and you only need to put it on exposed parts of the body. ~Deanna
