Guest guest
Penny, Try Colorful Colorado ...Cattle and sheep country plus hunters and fishermen galore. But every restaurant in our city of 100,000 + has vegetarian items on their menus. Even our little mountain restaurants serve Veggie meals. Our Walmarts and regular super markets carry so many organic items that I never have problems buying what I need. I have even bought organic Vegetarian products at the dollar store. We have 3 health food stores and several local farmers who sell organic or they advertize " no pesticides or herbicides " . At the local Farmer's Market I noticed a vendor selling 'organic pasta'. Contact your local market managers and ask for the items you want. Check your local farmers and gardeners and buy from them. Start by growing some things for yourself even if it's only in containers. Cook from scratch and follow some of the great recipes in the files. I have been a Vegetarian for almost 30 yrs. and in the begining there were none of the above. I couldn't buy organic then but I had no problem preparing Vegetarian meals. In the 'old days' when I ate out I would ask for my order to be prepared without meat. It wasn't easy then but it sure is today. Deanna in Colorado and , " Penny French " <penny368 wrote: > > I'm in Northwest Arkansas. It isn't easy being a vegetarian here! Guest guest
I get so aggravated at the Walmart here in Springdale. I mean, the corporate HQ is maybe 20 miles away in Bentonville, yet our store is constantly removing vegetarian items from the shelves. For example, the deli has some really good egg rolls - you have a choice of white meat chicken, pork, shrimp, and vegetarian. They suddenly took the vegetarian ones off the shelf. When I asked the manager, I was told " Oh, they aren't making them anymore. " Yet a month later my daughter and I were in the one just 5 miles away in Fayetteville, and they had them! They've also removed the Boca Smoked Sausages from the shelves too. And I loved those! I need to get my van fixed so I can shop in Fayetteville, although I don't know if they have them or not. The one thing I've noticed, in the produce section where the tofu is, they've removed most of the American flavored foods and substituted them for Mexican flavored. We have the soy chorizo, and several other things I don't have a clue about how to use, but since our town has a large Hispanic population, they tend to cater to them. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but why do they think it's okay to remove all of the Americanized versions to put up the Hispanic ones? I was hoping to get some Tofurkey peppered turkey slices the other day, now all they have is baloney, something I have NEVER liked, even when I ate meat! It's so frustrating. And has anyone else run into this problem - you go to a fast food restaurant and order a salad and ask them to hold the meat (since suddenly ALL salads must have meat on them), and they either treat you like you just sprouted horns and a tail or they just ignore your request? I've even been told " It's going to cost the same with or without the meat so you might as well take the meat. " UGH! I've resorted to telling them I'm allergic to meat - that's about the only way to get any of them to actually go to the trouble of making me a fresh salad with no meat on it. It just drives me crazy. I've reached the point where about the only place I eat out is Subway - I can order a veggie sandwich and see that they don't put any kind of meat on it. And, while I may not actually be allergic to any meat except for seafood, when I have accidentally gotten something that has meat in it or in the broth, I do get sick from eating it. I have one Chinese restaurant that I feel safe eating in - they speak very fractured English, but the owner always remembers me and she knows that I am allergic to seafood so she always makes sure that the people in the kitchen do not put any kind of fish sauce on my food or any other kind of meat. You would think as large as this area is, that there would be plenty of places that would offer some vegetarian versions or at least salads WITHOUT meat on them! _____
Guest guest
Hello girls, saying Hi to everyone, I'm new here :~) I just moved from NW Arkansas 14 months ago so I can sympathize with you! I always hit the Farmers Mkts and corner fruit stands big time. WM is so flaky with their buying, guess whoever gives them the best prices is how gets shelf space! I moved to a little town in New Mexico that is so much like Eureka Springs with the artsy crowd and old hippies that a big population is into living a healthy lifestyle so I don't have much trouble finding good things to eat! It's largely Hispanic also which we surely don't complain about as we love Mexican foods!!! I can just say I'm in a little bit of heaven here. , " Penny French " <penny368 wrote: > > At last! Guest guest
I think WalMart is more concerned about getting the cheapest products in possible, and they've never seemed too concerned about keeping items in stock which sold well. I used to do a lot of traveling for my job, and every WalMart I've ever been in anywhere was the same way. There was always a good supply of Hispanic foods, but very little in the way of organic versions of foods. And the vegetarian section always seemed to have the same small selection of products from what I remember. I have a lot of food allergies and don't even bother shopping there anymore for food since I have to eat mostly organic and they don't carry a whole lot of that. Luckily my local Kroger has a wonderful natural food section, and if I could still eat processed foods, I'd be doing great with the vegetarian products they offer. I drool over their frozen vegetarian section every time I'm in there. I can't eat at fast food places much now, but didn't garden salads used to be a staple at all of those places?? I live in a rural area without a lot of choices to eat at, but I don't seem to have a problem finding veggie salads and plates. Guest guest
That is strange, because I was very excited to see Yves products added to our Walmart in Murphy, NC, including the entrees. And, " they don't make them anymore " , seems to be the stock answer when the store just doesn't order them. I have hunted forever for whole wheat frozen bread. Rhodes told me to ask the frozen food manager. . And the answer????? You got it....they don't make them anymore. Good luck with finding your products. Guest guest
I live 20 mins out from Chicago, IL I'm lucky, there's a whole foods a few blocks away, and most grocery stores stock an organic section with vegan and veggie options to compete with Trader Joes and Whole Foods. , " preciousladyg2 " <preciousladyg2 wrote: > > Born in Savannah, GA, I call > Los Angeles, California home now. > > Gail > > , Tracey <missis@> wrote: > > > > Najma > > > > Hate to tell you this, but where I am (Brisbane Australia) it is 23c > > today AND it is winter > > > > Tracey > > >
