I hate to be picky, Marilyn. England is not in itself an island, but

rather part of an island which is topped by Scotland and which also

comprises Wales. We may all be part of the UK (including Northern

Ireland) but nothing is guaranteed to more enrage the Scots, Welsh or

Irish than to be told they are a part of England, LOL.

Christie (London/Irish, English and a wee bit Welsh, living in

Scotland and trying to hold it all together!)

I know the extent of the island, Christie. What I was saying that as vast

as the United States is, we are always calling it north/south and east/west.

I was in no way making light of the fact that England is part of a larger

island, just that it is nothing for us to travel 100 miles or much more just

getting places.

Sure, I understand that, Marilyn. It's just that since the UK is so

tiny in comparison with the US, a lot of Americans come over here and

do not realise that Britain and England are not synonymous and the

offence that can be taken. I know what you mean about distances - I

used to to live up in the northwest of P. Quebec and we thought

nothing of travelling 100 miles just to go to the cinema. Over here

taking a bus 10 miles along the coast feels like a major expedition!

I can believe that which is like a 60 mile drive here since most of our

driving is on expressways.
