This has been a huge battle for me. I am a recovered smoker not a. Non-smoker.

II fell off the wagon after 10 yrs but this last time it's been about 9 yrs with

no cigs. Toss. them in the trash take a deep breath and move forward. That's

all that would work for me. Donna

Has anyone ever smoked? Do you know of any herbs that make quitting

easier?

There is no magic potion. Keep thinking about your health and how there are

people out there that would give anything for a healthy set of lungs, at times I

felt like a prisoner to my cigs. All these years later I will still crave one

once in a while but the thought passes quickly. Donna

Re: Smoking

I wish there was an herb that made it easier!! I've never tried &

failed so many times at anything in my life. I used the gum, I used

the patch.... I wanted to have a baby and my husband said hell no -

not while I'm smoking so I had to quit 2 months before stopping my

birth control - that was 2 years ago and I still crave them!! I'm

going to keep following these posts to see if someone does have advice

to make the cravings stop!! Good luck!!

Yup, I'm with Donna. Cold turkey is the only way that really works because it's

the only

way that makes you realize that you alone [YOU] have to do it--no magic bullets,

no secret

mantras, no novena cards. Only you can stop you from killing yourself.

I got hypnotised in 1997 and had no withdrawals and the only side

effect was a huge increase in drinking ice water, which was another

benefit!!!

I have been smoke free ever since, and I even live with smoker now

I quit smoking the day Dana Reeve died. It wasn't hard for some reason - I

guess because my granddaughter was about to be born and I have a now 16 year

old son who has no one but me and his sister if something happens to me.

However, I did go to About.com and got some help from there. I did start

again on January 2 of this year and haven't quit yet, but that was due to

the stress of my then pending divorce. There are some good resources out

there to help you.

http://quitsmoking.about.com/index.htm?terms=quit+smoking You can sign up

for their newsletter (I think it was daily) and they have an online course

to help you plus forums to talk about it with others.

http://www.pmusa.com/en/quitassist/index.asp?source=home_fca3_graphic This

is Philip Morris' quit smoking site. I found a lot of good tips in there

for things to do to help, you can download their guide for free on the site.

You might try a health food store. There are several herbal/homeopathic

remedies available to help with the cravings.

At least for me, what worked was focusing on a reason that made it important

to quit smoking.

In 1977, I realized that if I continued to smoke and got sick, my son would

have to live with his father (1700 miles away). That did it! I quit cold

turkey!

Then, for reasons I won't go into, in 1997 I started up smoking again. On

January 1, 2000 I quit once again because I was going to become a Grandma

for the first time and I wanted to be sure I would be around a loooong time

for her.

Quit cold turkey again....maybe I should say " cold tofurky " ...grin...and no

relapses.

What I don't understand now is.....how can people spend darn near $5 a PACK

!!!!! OMG!!!! I'm cheap enough....grin...I think THAT would be my reason to

quit if I were smoking now....!

Good luck....and really, you CAN do it!!

Ahh smoking! I smoked my first cigarette in 1969 when I was 10 years old! My

big sister smoked so of course I had to as well! I smoked off and on the whole

time until 1988. I was in sales and smoking about 2 packs a day or more... I was

walking down the street one day smoking a cigarette and I caught a glimpse of

myself in a department store picture window and I thought I looked awful! I am

way too pretty to smoke I said to myself! I put the cigs down and haven't smoked

cigarettes since then! and yes, folks there are herbs you can use to help GET

OVER IT... mostly if you feel like smoking a cigarette.... go outside and find a

dandelion... pick a leave or a flower and take a chew on it.... the bitterness

of the taste and the healing abilities of the dandelion will help you eventually

get over the cravings. Or, you can get some dandelion tincture at your local

health food store and use that. While we're speaking of smoking... we all know

smoking causes death. We all know

better and have most of our lives.... Picture this.... You are an alien

visiting from a far off planet... you land on earth and you see an earthling put

a white stick to it's mouth and then LIGHT FIRE TO IT! Sounds ridiculous doesn't

it.... Think about it! If you smoke.... just know you're better than that nasty

monkey on your back! Say Adios and breathe much easier... and oh yeah, your food

will taste ALOT better too! Good luck!

Life is not measured by how many breaths we take, but by the moments that take

our breath away.

I don't know if this will help you stop smoking but it helped me and

others. So simple but when I quit smoking over 30 yrs ago I noticed

that I was often 'gasping for breath'and videos showed me to have a

persistant cough. I tapered off smoking, limiting myself to a certain

number of cigarettes per day. Within a week or so I noticed that I

was going for hours at a time without smoking. Then it was only one

per day until one day I noticed that I had gone several days without

a cigarette.

Then I lost count. If I craved, I would fill my lungs as full as I

could with air taking quick breaths through my nose then exhaling

slowly out of my mouth. I noticed that this deep breathing seemed to

ease my craving for nicotine. In a year my lungs were healthy and the

craving stopped. It was during this time that I also started the

Vegetarian lifestyle. I've never looked back.

If I can do it so can you.
