Fresh Pear Question

Quick question for all you gardeners:

We have a pear tree that is so full it's breaking the branches - and the

pears aren't ripe. We've probably got 2-3 weeks before they're ready to

eat.

Will they ripen if we pick them now (and maybe put them in the sun or

something?).

Or, do you have any suggestions with what to do with unripe pears?

Thanks!

Put the unripe pears in brown paper bags. Put an apple in each bag

with the pears. The ethylene gas released by the apple will ripen the

pears. Keep a close eye on the whole process because it can ripen the

pears pretty quickly. I have put an apple in with avacadoes when they

are pretty green. It works well.

There are some recipes that are better if you do it before the pear is

fully ripe anyways. Poached Pears is one that springs to mind, that way the

fruit doesn't break down into a mush...or you could do a pear version of

apple sauce.
