...... and the smell of the wet earth too. Have you noticed how the

birdsongs seem clearer when it has rained?

The birds seem to love the rain. We have several bird feeders in the

garden, and when it is raining there seem to be even more birds flitting to

and fro. Last year I left my hanging basket (well plastic really) hanging

on the wall, and a few weeks back I went to move it to replant it, and there

was a scrabbling inside. There were baby bluetits, in the area that would

normally be a water reservoir. We had to wait until they had flown before

we could replant. They were really sweet.

How precious! I bet it was fun checking on them here and there.

We usually have a morning dove couple that lives in the garden and

then a Momma and Poppa duck that visit the pool early spring while

it is still green.

We use to have cardinals that would nest in the trees and our patio

umbrellas, but the evil Grackles chased them away.

I love ducks. I've only ever seen them in our garden once - we don't have a

pond. There are lakes about fifty yards away, and there are plenty of ducks

there. We do get lots of Canada geese in the field at the end of the

garden. I like them but they are very noisy. Cardinals - are they the

lovely red birds? and what are Grackles?

Yes, the cardinals are the beautiful red birds. The females have just

a touch of red and are more brown, but still beautiful.

Grackles are evil black birds a little bigger than a robin that " yell "

at you, chase other birds away, and dirty the pool. Because they are

clean birds, they always nest near water and clean their waste out of

their nests by tossing it into the water.

They keep chasing away my morning doves and I am sure that is why the

cardinals moved out. Their babies weren't safe any more.

The grackles are thugs through and through! They chase the other birds

in packs of 5-20 at a time.

The pictures I have seen look lovely.

Grackles - really do sound aggressive. Robins are fairly aggressive here,

but they are around only in pairs, and we have so many birds in our garden,

the robins don't stand a chance of ruling the roost.

Hi Nikki

Many years ago, when my kids were very young, we were passing a pond with

about thirty ducks on it. They were quacking away, so I quacked back - and

I must have said something rude in duck language, because they got cross and

chased us!

A few years ago they were used by small companies in the countryside, as guard 'dogs'. They seem to have quite a lot of character.

Hi Jo

I think that I will just stick with leaving bread and seed for them

on the deck and leave the conversations for the doves and squirrels.

Better safe than sorry! :)

We had a similar incident with geese, but we never said a word to

them. DH and I sat down by a pond and there were geese across the

way. They swam over and started up the bank towards us and kept

coming. They were only distracted by the lady throwing bread from a

bench aways down from us. When we got to the car, we looked back

only to see the lady on the very top of the bench surrounded by the

geese. She hurled the bag of bread, jumped off and ran to her car.

So no more geese for me!
