Hi! I've always been very interested in becoming vegan and living a

cruelty free lifestyle, but not always so sure of how to go about it.

Anyway, my main question is what the recommended vitamins/minerals and

supplements are, for full nutrition and long term health. (Ha! That

sounded kinda dorky so…) Basically, I'm curious 2 know what

vitamins/minerals/supplements does the average vegan take every day?

Also, is it overall more expensive living a vegan lifestyle?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Liz :)

Hi Liz

I don't think there is such a thing as an average vegan. Some take

supplements some don't. I think, from reading research, that every vegan

should take a Vitamin B12 supplement to protect the heart and circulatory

system. I think of supplements as an insurance policy and also used them

when I was an omnivore. I fel that a meat/dairy diet needs an insurance

policy more than a vegan diet does to protect from the harm done by these

~foods~

I take Quest Vegan Vitamins and Multiminerals, Vitamin C 1 to 2 grams a day,

Vitamin E, 300 ius a day, and Mixed Essential Fatty Acids. I also make sure

I get some Vitamin D2 in foods such as cereals, margarine, soya milk, etc.

I also take a calcium, magnesiun, boron supplement..

I take supplements because I find (and have always found) it difficult to

eat enough food to ensure an optimal supply of nutrients.

Good luck

Jo

They say that B12 is the only thing you can not get from a vegan diet

unless you eat your food without cleaning it properly. In bygone days

vegans could get everything because they could eat their food directly

after pulling it from the ground. I would recommend crushed Linseed

(Flaxseeds)every day to balance your omega 3 and 6 as most people use

fish for this. I also think that you should use sprouted seeds and

beans where ever you can because they maximise the nutrition potential

of the food and you get more for the same number of calories.

you technically don't need any supplements to be vegan, except mayhaps B12...

depends on how you feel, yer lifestyle, yer diet, etc

a balanced vegan diet should contain more then enough of vitamins and minerals fer a healthy life

B12 is about the only one you need to watch fer

cheers

Liz,

In my experiance, as long as you are having some foods which are fortified with B12 ( e.g. Soya milk, margarine, some cereals etc ) and have a good varied diet which contains some greens, some seeds etc then you should be O.K.

Personally I feel that society is being brainwashed by all this talk of pill popping being the answer to any deficiencies, whether they be dietry, psycologicaly, or physiologicaly.

Gotta go now, used too many big words.......now wheres that dictionary suppliment?

You know the difference between an aethiest and an agnostic is that

the aethiest is a little bit afraid that they may be wrong and will

not take the risk. When it comes to b12 I am an aethiest
