Guest guest
I was so annoyed last night. I woke up at 2.20 a.m. to go to the bathroom, and there was this enormous gun shot outside the house. It really scared me - it was so loud. I thought we had a loony with a gun hanging around in the middle of the night. It was the local rabbit hunters driving around in their truck with the infra red lights and guns - but surely they shouldn't be allowed to shoot right beside a house at that time of night. Guest guest
As far as I know they hunt rabbits only at night. Unfortunately our garden backs onto the estate of the Duke of Northumberland and there's not much we can do about it. Usually they finish shooting by about 11 p.m., so not too bad, but it did used to keep the kids awake those nights. They also breed pheasants and partridge for shooting. They breed them, let them loose for a while and then shoot them! The birds come into our garden, and at least they are safe there. I do wish people wouldn't feel the need to kill :-( It must be aweful to hear guns often. Luckily it's against the law to own one and carry it on the streets here - but gun crime is on the increase unfortunately. Guest guest
Geez, ya know, it is strange but one never thinks about hunting laws being much different in different countries. The standard in most states is no discharging a firearm within 150' of a residence and no hunting from dusk to dawn. Of course, city dwellers can expect the usual suspects to be out there proving their manhood (in reality stupidhood). Guest guest
In the city gunshots are pretty common here too. Of course they're not hunting rabbits here either. Guest guest
As if the killing wasn't bad enough, they actually breed those poor things to do it! That's horrendous! I hate places like that. We have some in Southern IL too. Concealed weapons are illegal here, but that doesn't stop them from being carried. It's a shame too, usually the innocent are the ones who get hit by the stray bullets. BB Nikki , " Jo Cwazy " <heartwork@c...> wrote: > As far as I know they hunt rabbits only at night. Guest guest
About 2 months ago a five year old was shot and badly injured while playing in the schoolyard in Northern Ireland. It was touch and go for a while but he was discharged from the hospital last week. They have not found the idiot responsible but assume that it was a stray bullet from a hunter. Guest guest
They are released into the wild for a certain time - I think for a breeding cycle, and then they go shooting, so it cannot be theft. They don't stay in the garden all the time they come and go between us and the field, but I guess that because we have quite a few trees it is welcoming to them. Guest guest
Well we are in a semi detached house. The field runs along the back of our garden and round the side of the other half of our house. Normally they shoot about 100 yards away - we always presume in the other direction as nobody has been hurt. This time they fire from right outside the neighbours house - about 10 feet away, and presumably up the field away from us all. It was one of these enormous rifles (I guess all you Americans are used to them) that made such a noice. We do like to feed the birds and have quite a variety - even the baby woodpecker doesn't fly away when we are in the garden now. He/She is so sweet and noisy! The pheasants usually eat the seeds that the smaller birds drop, but recently have found that they can land on and just about sit in the dish that surrounds the birdfeeder - what a sight! I know if I was a bird and had the choice between your gardens no shoot zone, and a belly full of shot, which I would choose. Guest guest
Hi Jo That is one of my very favorite parts of the day, watching the birds either at the feeder or at the fountain. Most of them are pretty use to us as well and just go about their business while we work in the yard or even sit nearby. Guest guest
I like it when the young ones are out and about - they are very sweet, and quite brave (or foolish, I suppose). Guest guest
There is a pair of ground squirrels that live down the road from us. They live in this huge old oak stump. The kidlet has named them Arabella and Sebastian. They now have two kids she's named Telemain and Antorel (from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles). We watch them everytime we drive in or out of our place. It is a real kick watching them grow. Sometimes we just have to stop the car and watch, they are such characters!
