That is so cool!

It's amazing how 5 minutes of watching animals can take your mind

off so much and leave you refreshed. It gives you a new perspective.

Much like watching children play when they do not realize you are

there.

Very true Nikki.

Linda - what are ground squirrels like?

Another question - do you have humming birds in your neck if the wood?

Ground squirrels (California Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus beecheyl) look

like you crossed a gray squirrel with a chipmunk. Smaller than a regular

squirrel, bigger than a chipmunk. Brownish and their tails aren't as bushy

as regular squirrels. While they do run up and down trees, they aren't as

likely to jump from tree to tree. Out in the country you are likely to see

them in tree stumps or sitting on the tops of fence posts. They aren't as

noisy as their cousins either.

Funny you should ask about the hummingbirds. The kidlet came running in

yesterday because she almost ran into one. She was jumping on her tampoline

and one came zinging across the yard as she bounced up. We do have

hummingbirds. Anna's, Costa's, Rufus and Calliope hummingbirds are regular

residents. We also occasionally see Black chinned and Allen's.

We don't have as many here as we did at our old house. Where we used to

live some of them had moved in permanently and had given up migrating. We

had two huge fushias (over 6' tall and wider than tall) that bloomed most of

the year. One was right under my kitchen window. Creating a kind of arch

over the fuschia were two lilacs. The hummers loved it there.

Ground squirrels sound rather sweet :-)

I am jealous - of course, there are no humming birds here, and I've

only ever seen them on wildlife programmes.
