Ah, but they do run the equivalent of a kill shelter. I haven't finished

checking out what else he had to say.

If the chap is working for fast food companies he will want to do

everything he can to discredit PETA and any other successful animal

rights group.

Yes, I'm sure he would which is why I don't accept what he has written at

face value. I used to do a lot of work for the feds, worked for a city and

worked for some lawyers (famous and enfamous <g>). I have " sources " and

lots of experience investigating stuff.

I won't accept any of it until I can verify what is said. However, the

no-kill shelter part of it is true. The only way PETA gets around saying

they don't run a shelter is because it isn't actually a shelter. They go

out pick up animals, make no attempt at placement and immediately euthenise

them. They easily have the funds and the fundraising abilities to run a

no-kill shelter. They choose not. They choose to be a kill " shelter. "

The spokes person for them was all about excuses when this broke on the news

about a month ago. They don't have a " shelter, " they don't have the time,

none of the animals were worth saving, they are helping people, the animals

were old, blah, blah, blah.

Well, the folks that thought " PETA = save animals " were aghast when they

found out. The ones that took their animals to them personally thought they

were going to find them homes. The two local shelters that referred animals

to them thought they were going to find them homes. And the one shelter

gave a list of ages because the head honcho was livid. The animals weren't

old, they ranged from a few weeks to 4 years.

You can read about PETA's position on euthansia etc. at www.askcarla.com

Here's the specific answer they give.

" Every day in the United States, tens of thousands of puppies and kittens

are born. Compare this to the 11,000 human births each day, and it’s clear

that there can never be enough homes for all these animals. Shelters are

stuck with the heartrending job of dealing with animals nobody wants. Those

who refuse to spay and neuter their animals, who abandon animals when they

grow tired of them, and who patronize pet shops instead of adopting stray or

shelter animals make euthanasia a tragic necessity. "

That's the logic, but frankly I couldn't give a damn about it and won't give

funds to PETA for as long as that practice is in place.

Cheers

Mike

The answer is education, education, education and free neutering clinics.

We did one in our area. Put the forms out at the local welfare office and

people came in droves. We gave out vouchers and had at least one vet in

each city working with the program. The guesstamation is that we stopped

the birth of thousands and the resulting dumps and deaths from unwanted

puppies and kittens. We've convinced local pet shops not to sell puppy mill

puppies. They have shelter days instead. We've encouraged local feed

stores not to sell baby chicks and bunnies at Easter.

We do our own fundraising, park infront of places like Costco with a sign

asking for bags of dog and cat food and that is how we keep the expense down

for the volunteers that take the hard to place critters so that the shelter

can continue to be a no kill shelter. The only critters we've put to sleep

(and it has been put to sleep while someone holds them, pets them and talks

to them) have been those with terminal illnesses.

It never ceases to amaze me that people will have FiFi or Fido for 10 years

or more and the minute they get ill or there are vet expenses they drive out

and dump them at shelter. Far too many have waited so long that something

that could be treated is end-stage.

~~sigh~~ Wish we had just a small amount of PETA's budget. We could turn

all the shelters into no-kill shelters. Education doesn't cost all that

much money.
