He was quoted as being a man seeking justice NOT revenge. There are calls for his work to be carried on, he tracked down over 1100 nazis/people responsible in some way for the atrocities. Bearing in mind the length of time since this happened, does anyone think there are any of these people still alive to track down?, and now that most of the horrific facts are known would it achieve anything anyway? Sad quote from the funeral : I asked a few young people, and they said: 'Who was he?' I was so disappointed! Guest guest
HI Peter I think Wiesenthal did a really good job. I think there probably isn't a need for anyone to carry on the work now. I'm probably strange but when I was a kid I didn't like learning about wars at school. Guest guest
Your not strange, I was the same, and still am to some degree. I remember being around 10 years old at a battlefield site at Ypres, and the photographs of the mutilation not just of humans but pictures of half a horse blown up in a tree, so many horses died in WW1 - they were used to pull anything heavy a lot of the time, then eaten when rations ran out. Those pictures and the tour of the "site" ( they still had trenches left exactly as they were ) still etched on my mind. Not sure someone so young should be exposed to that graphic detail of the pornorgraphy of war, still makes me shudder. Guest guest
He said he was seeking justice not revenge. In instances like this, is there a difference? There can't be too many folks left. Few of those in any authority position could have been younger than 20 and that would make them at least 80. I think that if anyone is going to take up his work they should concentrate on the facts and getting those out there. However, it needs to be the facts and not the claim that all the deaths were Jews. It really is time that ALL those who were persecuted and killed were acknowledged! Guest guest
A lot of the Jewish sites. Also, a lot of the books used here in the U.S. don't mention anyone except the Jews. I learned about the reality from my first job. When I was 12, I babysat for a couple (he was a Russian Jew, she was from the Middle East, I don't remember where exactly). They spent a lot of time talking to my little sister and I and telling us about their experiences and the experiences of their families and others during the war. He told us about the gypsies and she told us about people who were "different." It was surprising to me because the schools only taught about the Jews. And the only folks ever invited to the schools when they did something on WWII were Jews. For example, the Houghton Mifflin text that is used in California schools only devotes two columns to the Holocaust. At the end of the two columns it says that the Nazis killed about 12 million people during the war and that 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust. There is no mention of anyone else dying in the Holocaust and the implication of the other deaths is that they were "normal" war related deaths. I'd like to see more than 2 columns, at a minimum a whole chapter, and the mention of ALL the folks that were tortured, gassed, etc. ALL of their lives were impacted by Hitler's insanity, not just the Jews.
