In my recent Anatomy classes, I had asked the teacher (a nurse and massage

therapist) what could be done about the " degenerative " part of the diseases my

older relatives are suffering from: disks, arthritis, etc... She told us that

the single most important thing (besides drinking ALOT of water!) that one can

do in regards to keeping the ligaments and cartilage healthy is to move the

joints! Just moving your various joints, i.e. flexing and extending,

stretching, etc. will make you more comfortable by making your joints used to

moving. Using your joints bathes the ends of your bones in synovial fluid

(think " oil " ) and the more movement you do, the more you are going to be capable

of doing. just a thought... also, haven't been to any good cocktail parties to

be able to throw around the " 25 cent words " !!

pulling, lifting exercising muscles keeps the aches

and pains out of the bones and joints.

HI All

What sort of exercise do you do, and do you consider it to be enough for

you.

I don't exercise as much as I should. I walk daily, but need to do more.

Many years ago, Peter used to keep me fit with badminton and table tennis.

Kids in general keep you busy. I used to do ballroom and Latin American

dancing, until I had a knee injury, and then did Tai Chi until I got a

frozen shoulder, which takes about a year to get better. I am now out of

the habit of exercising other than walking.

Hi Jo

I use to belong to a health club, use to do aerobics minimum 3x

times a week and use to lift a bit of weights (no bulk, just tone).

Now I have no time. So I stretch and luckily do alot of walking with

work. Not enough but some. And then of course there's running after

Zak and playing plus neighborhood walks.

I do need to shape up a bit more though. Just tone, definately not

lose any weight!

Zak is thinking of martial arts and I may rejoin if he takes it up.

I really want to get into Yoga and/or Tai Bo.

Nikki :)

Hi Nikki

It sounds like you have made quite an effort in the past. When you

have youngish children they keep you very busy. When mine were at

primary school I used to walk them to school, walk home, walk back to

collect them and walk home, which meant 6 miles a day. What with

that and playing with them, I got enough exercise.

After having a couple of problems my exercise has decreased to a

state where I am no longer fit, and I must motivate myself now to to

exercise that will get me fitter without setting off my knee again.

Entropy!

Hi Jo

That is definately something that can get in the way of a lot of

things. Are you able to bike ride? In the summer Zak and I try to go

at least every other week for a nice ride. Usually we will bike to a

playground and then play and bike back.

They say that walking is one of the best exercises that you can do

for your heart.

I personally need to start dedicating a bit more time to myself,

health and mental wise. Too much work, way too much computer (work

and pleasure).

But playing is definately my fav exercise of all!

I hear that walking is one of the best excercises, because it also is much lower impact than a lot of excercises. I use a recumbant bike for cardio, but I like what walking does for my whole body.jo <jo.heartwork wrote:

I do very little exercise, and should do more. I usually walk briskly for the train in the morning ( 30 mins ) six days a week., and very rarely take my daughters out on their bikes ( usually end up waiting more than riding ).

Dont seem to have the time or the inclination, having to get up at 05:30 every morning, and not getting home until 17:45. Its a drag.

I used to LOVE martial arts! Well I still do, but am not doing it. My daughter was a timid thing against anybody else but me, then she came out like a tiger (and lots of other animals too) at me. There was this cute little thing that drove me nuts when I had to spar him. He was a little bitty thing, but he was a dynamo... he couldn't block for beans, so I didn't want to hurt him, but he moved fast with feet and fists and everything else flying. I sometimes wanted to put my hand on his little head to hold him still for a moment so I could catch my breath!earthstrm <nikkimack wrote:

there is a carioke class that im thinking of putting my son in.

I have always been interested in brazil their culture.

I imagine that carioke is similar to kung fu and I saw a flyer up for it.

He expressed an interest in it too, it is also taught to adults.

I'm kinda curious about it.

I just walk the dog, everyday for sometimes tree times a day.

I would go walking in the woods, but I found a tick sucking my blood

and It wouldn't come of my skin, ebver since that I've

been scared to go back.

I love to walk and climb trees.

but the sun here is unforgiving. It feels like infierno.

During the month of August, it is really crazy to go out during the

hours of 10 am and 3 pm.

I once walked to the supermarket and almost had a heat stroke.

I have a treadmill but its in the garage. sometimes I skateboard with

my kids.

to exercise, I feel its a motivation thing. You have to tell yourself

to and not give up. but I haven't really.

My MIL was kind enuf to give me her treadmill, but I think it's older than dirt. I feel like I'm running and walking on concrete! I buy new nice shock absorbing shoes and the darn things are trashed in a couple of months of using them (the treadmill and shoes) daily. I bet I'm funny to watch on the treadmill. The thing rocks like crazy and I didn't realize how used to it I had gotten until I was reading and walking one day and my son began to laugh. I looked at him expectantly and he said that it kept rocking more and more viciously until I just bounced off the wall, back onto the treadmill and resumed walking without missing a beat. I guess I don't even think about it anymore. It's also very narrow, so my foot will often get stuck sideways and I do the same thing, jump in the air off the wall so it doesn't break my foot. (The doc drilled into my head how important excercise is for me and hey, I don't wanna

walk when it's 115 degrees outside!) I call it the bucking bronco, among other things. I used to have a workout room in my spare room until my daughter moved back in, so I put the stuff in the living room and dining rooms. It actually works out better that way. My TV is also older than dirt and doesn't have close captioning, so I started watching DVD's (which do have close captioning) from Blockbuster, where I have one of those unlimited accounts. Now I'll happily walk and run the length of the movie, that is if it's a good movie. Speaking of which, did anybody else watch Alexander? It seems to start at a time frame and then jump to two different time frames moving towards the beginning one. One it identifies and xx amount of time earlier, the other is identified by xxx bc, which I can't seem to make fit into the xx amount of time frame. Anybody else see it?Anouk Sickler <zurumato

There was an incident a couple of years ago where someone tried to mug an opera singer... the opera singer simply let rip with the highest, loudest note they could muster, and the mugger ended up in hospital with burst ear-drums!!!!
