I learned some basic German a few years ago - I'll have to swot up on it again. The translations have been interesting, for instance, you don't activate a pager, you put a line on it. Things like that. I'm currently trying to learn American Sign Language. The problem I ran into is that I've been learning to do it, but then when I saw it done, I realized that also needs to be learned. It looks different. I'm thinking I should get a mirror to practice in front of. It would be nice to take a class. Also interesting is that I found an ASL class at one of the community colleges but they only offer ASL 2, not the ASL 1. Guest guest Posted October 17, 2005 Report Share Posted October 17, 2005 hi jonnie, usually colleges alternate between ASL 1 and ASL2, this could be the case for your college. do they have a website, maybe you could call. I would definately encourage you to take a class. Being with other American Sign Language students helps because their enthusiams will rub off on and you can practice with your classmates. I've always been interested in ASL, I've had friends who knew sign language and would practice together. it wasn't serious. It wasnt until two years ago when my baby was born that I started reading up on the benefits of American Sign Language. I did research and read many articles on the way babies learn and found out that babies can actually communicate through Gestures first, before they are able to talk. They can move their hands, before they can clearly enunciate any words. Babies who know sign language, cry less, are smarter, more secure and have a better bonding/communication with their families. (i know this sounds like I am bragging, but really there are several studies on this.) When he was born I was alone in the house and bought some books through the internet. They were all kids books, meant for children. (these are also available at the library). As an experiment, I started signing with him and it was very successful. some signs he did; 1. baby wants breastmilk = thumb on lips 2. baby wants mommy = thumb on chin 3. baby wants daddy = thumb on forehead 4. I love you = hands on heart 5. sleepy = tilt head sideways 6. water = three fingers on chin etc. etc. He could do maybe a hundred, not that there is anything wrong with crying, but he rarely did. He is two years old and prefers to speak now, but still remembers most of his signs, and will ocasionally do them. It is I who have been lazy with them. I am sorry to hear that you are having hearing problems, but it is not completely negative. I once met a sixteen year old girl, who was a neighbor of my mom's.
