Guest guest
Oh I'm not saying he was a saint, none of them are any good in my eyes, but some have done some good things. But at the time Reagan ran I was young and he happened to be my fav president. When you grow up with those feelings they stick to ya. Plus I think he was an excellent speaker (at least early on, later years kinda comical). He did do some good things as well though. Just some basic excerpts: Dealing skillfully with Congress, Reagan obtained legislation to stimulate economic growth, curb inflation, increase employment, and strengthen national defense. He embarked upon a course of cutting taxes and Government expenditures, refusing to deviate from it when the strengthening of defense forces led to a large deficit. In 1986 Reagan obtained an overhaul of the income tax code, which eliminated many deductions and exempted millions of people with low incomes. At the end of his administration, the Nation was enjoying its longest recorded period of peacetime prosperity without recession or depression. In foreign policy, Reagan sought to achieve " peace through strength. " During his two terms he increased defense spending 35 percent, but sought to improve relations with the Soviet Union. In dramatic meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, he negotiated a treaty that would eliminate intermediate-range nuclear missiles. Reagan declared war against international terrorism, sending American bombers against Libya after evidence came out that Libya was involved in an attack on American soldiers in a West Berlin nightclub. By ordering naval escorts in the Persian Gulf, he maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. In keeping with the Reagan Doctrine, he gave support to anti-Communist insurgencies in Central America, Asia, and Africa. Overall, the Reagan years saw a restoration of prosperity, and the goal of peace through strength seemed to be within grasp. And let us not forgot the fav phrase " Tear down that wall! Guest guest
That is straight out of his pr folks and not necessarily the truth. Kinda like history being written by the winner. He increased the military budget by cutting veterans! He had all the disabled vets re-evaluated and cut their benefits even if they were totally disabled. My f-i-l was 65 when he got his Reaganomics letter. He'd been disabled since getting out of the service in WWII! However, he still went to work until it got to the point where he couldn't stand up for more than 10 minutes and his hands were shaking so bad he couldn't even hold a coffee cup without spilling the coffee on himself. The VA docs got the Social Security forms for him, got him Social Security Disability and the VA disability since his disabilities came from shell shock and walking in mud for two tours (caused some problem with the bones in his feet and they started to disintegrate). Under Reaganomics, the new docs (they didn't use the old VA docs, they used rent-a-docs who are right out of school and work per diem) told him to apply to the EDD for retraining and get a job! Yeah, he did wonders for the military. Ollie North is really something to be proud of! Reagan's economic growth was not greater than the presidents before him. Kennedy's was 5%, Reagan's 3.2%. Savings rates declined from 8% to 6.5%. Productivity rates under Kennedy (4.1%), Johnson (3.2%) and Reagan (1.5%). The budget deficit in real dollars was higher under Reagan than any other president until George Bush. $101 billiion when he took office, $141 billion when he left office. The national debt rose from $1,004 billion when he took office and 27% of the GDP to $2028 billion and 43% of the GDP. As a share of the GDP tax revenues fell by 1%. The federal budget was not reduced. It rose by 69% by the time he left office. Domestic spending fell from 15.3% ot 12.9% and defense spending doubled. HOWEVER, that money did not go to military personnel but rather to the Halliburtons of the time. The Federal Reserve, not Reagan was responsible for the end of high inflation rates. Reagan's economic expansions lasted 92 months of a 2 term office. Kennedy's lasted 102 months of a less than 2 term office. During the Reagan years, the total share of the national income tilted toward the wealthiest. The wealthiest 5% increased their share of the total income from 16.5% to 18.3% while the poorest fifth saw their share fall from 4.2% to 3.8%. Guest guest
sorry nikki, you know i luvs ya but..reagan was a monster.. lets look at this piece by piece, k? By ordering naval escorts in the Persian Gulf, he maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. i guess supplying arms to both sides during the iran-iraq war isn't considered a problem tho? and blowing an iranian airliner out of the air is ok, as long as we get OUR oil Reagan declared war against international terrorism, sending American bombers against Libya after evidence came out that Libya was involved in an attack on American soldiers in a West Berlin nightclub. that khadafi..how unreliable..here was reagan shouting to the world that libyan hit squads were out to get him, and he didn't have the common curtesy to send a single one..tsk tsk funny how half the people indicted in germany for the nightclub bombing worked for the CIA at some point according to east german secret police documents, the prosecutions main figure in the case, the one basically pointed the finger at the defendants, a guy named Eter(sic?), ran a CIA front company out of Malta and was a frequent visitor to the US embassy in germany.... but..thats ok, who needs proof really especially when we can just bomb another country and kill a bunch of ppl including khadafi's adopted kid.... its obviously not terrorism when we do it Plus I think he was an excellent speaker (at least early on, later years kinda comical). actors are like that..... In keeping with the Reagan Doctrine, he gave support to anti-Communist insurgencies in Central America, Asia, and Africa. i'm sure all the ppl killed by death squads in central and south america are very pleased to hear that And let us not forgot the fav phrase " Tear down that wall! " ranks right up there with: My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes. earthstrm <nikkimack Oct 12, 2005 5:30 AM Reagan WAS Re: Oh I'm not saying he was a saint, none of them are any good in my eyes, but some have done some good things. Guest guest
Speaking of which, I saw something on TV recently and I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. It was mentioned that Bush's presidency was a war presidency and that it's always really hard on those presidents. I'm thinking that it's well known (but not neccessarily admited) that the people don't think we should be in that war anyways....earthstrm <nikkimack wrote: Oh I'm not saying he was a saint, none of them are any good in my eyes, but some have done some good things. But at the time Reagan ran I was young and he happened to be my fav president.
