Guest guest
I was just wondering what do you guys think of weeds? I have some and I am letting them grow, because they are pretty and seen as though they want to live and why should I disturb them as I should just let them be. when I first moved here I couldn't tell what was a weed, so I was watering the weeds, I thought they were flowers and didn't know that I was supposed to pull them out. on the other hand, I have some other weeds which are choking my other plants. I have pulled them out, but they are very persistant. the dilemma i guess is, should weeds be pulled out? don't they grow like that in nature? what is the big deal in letting them just be? is it because america is obssesed with short grass? why is tall grass so unattractive? is tall grass unnattractive? isn't pulling out weeds, plant racism? is it possible that plants that are planted and weeds can cohabitate? aren't some weeds medicinal? Shouldn't we give them credit for being so persistant? what would america or any country look like (imagine) if nobody mowed their lawn? what did people do before lawn mowers were invented? is it possible to tame nature? for what purpose? is aesthetic more important than natural? does it justify to spray those toxic weed killers and pollute the environment, just to say I have no weeds? what is the functional purpose of a manicured lawn? what is so beautiful about a manicured garden? why do humans love to control nature? Is someone who doesn't mow their lawn crazy or lazy? Can weeds be beautiful too? why do bees love the weeds better, than a imported european heirloom (that this an the other) flower? why can't I call a weed a beautiful flower? in one neighborhood, why does everyone plant the same flowers? why do people put plastic bags under mulch? are plastic bags under mulch more attrative than weeds? should I pull out all of my weeds? ok, so I had more than one question
Guest guest
Hi Anoluk I think there should be some space for weeds. Obviously we have to keep our gardens from getting overgrown otherwise we not be able to get out of our houses. Also local councils don't like too much mess. I have a small area of nettles, and leave some weeds in borders to flower - some are quite pretty. The lawn is a wild lawn, with daisies, dandelions, buttercups, clover etc. in it. Obviously it needs to be mown a couple of times a year but we don't do it that often. There are some weeds that I really wish weren't in the garden - ground elder being the worst. It grows from any tiny piece of root left in the ground and grows and spreads fast. It chokes everything around it including other weeds! If I could get rid of that I would. Guest guest
weed is just a made up term because someone decided that this plant is cool and we like it, and that one is a weed and we don't like it you like em..keep em! so called weeds are an important part of the soil and building up the permaculture Anouk Sickler <zurumato Oct 20, 2005 11:14 PM Re: gardening question I was just wondering what do you guys think of weeds? Guest guest
You belong to my grandfather's gardening philosophy -- a weed is a plant you don't want <g> As to weeds, I get rid of things that aren't native and things that I don't want. I have some areas that are " wild " and to some folks have no logic or reason. The butterflies and hummingbirds love the area! In our veggie space we use the no till method and use mulches instead of weeding. Much kinder to the soil! Why pull " your " supposed " weeds " if you enjoy them? I might pull them if they are an invasive weed that harms native plants but otherwise, enjoy away. As to people and their lawns and so forth and so on. They're sheople and anal retentive! Guest guest
What is a weed?, one defenition is that it is nothing more than a plant in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, some weeds are very invasive and once they set in are next to impossible to get rid of, especially the ones that wil grow from every tiny bit of root thts left behind.
