'Burger bill' passed by US House

People who get fat cannot blame food sellers, says the House

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill aimed at making it

harder for people to sue the food industry for causing obesity.

Lawmakers voted 306-120 in favour of the Personal Responsibility in

Food Consumption Act - or the " cheeseburger bill " , as it has been nicknamed.

The bill, which has still to go before the Senate, follows a series of

legal actions against fast-food companies.

A spokesman for the firms welcomed the move to outlaw such cases.

Scott Vinson of the National Council of Chain Restaurants praised the

House for " denouncing frivolous obesity lawsuits brought by plaintiffs

seeking to blame restaurants for making them overweight " .

The council represents brands including McDonald's, Burger King, KFC

and Pizza Hut.

Indulgence

The Republican chairman of the House judiciary committee, James

Sensenbrenner, said fast-food retailers were not to blame for Americans'

over-indulgence.

" It is not the place of the law to protect them from their own

excess, " he said, adding that anyone suffering from obesity should go to a

doctor, not a lawyer.

The bill's opponents included California Democrat Bob Filner, who said

the fast-food industry marketed fatty food to children and should take

responsibility.

Other critics said the bill was unnecessary, since such cases were

generally thrown out by the courts.

The legislation will not ban cases involving negligence, such as those

stemming from tainted food.

Congress Passes Pro-Gun Legislation

The House of Representatives has handed the gun industry a major victory. On

Thursday, lawmakers voted to protect firearms manufacturers and dealers from

liability lawsuits. The bill now goes to President Bush, who has promised to

sign it. The Republican-led measure passed with significant Democratic support.

The gun liability bill is the number one legislative priority of the National

Rifle Association and it has been for years. NRA President Wayne LaPierre called

it a " historic piece of legislation. " The NRA exploited the aftermath of Katrina

to promote the legislation. A recent statement on the NRA website said, " What

we've seen in Louisiana - the breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of

disaster - is exactly the kind of situation where the Second Amendment was

intended to allow citizens to protect themselves. " The bill is aimed at killing

lawsuits seeking to hold gun manufacturers and dealers liable for crimes

committed with weapons they sold. The chief House sponsor of the bill, Florida

Republican Cliff Stearns, said the bill received a boost when Pentagon officials

said they supported it as a way to ensure a reliable supply of American-made

weapons to the military. This bill is part of a push by Republicans to attack

tort law that allows corporations to be sued over the impact of their products.

On Wednesday, the House passed the so-called " cheeseburger bill, " which protects

the restaurant industry from health-related lawsuits.

Does anyone else ever watch Donnie Deautch's show?

Well, if you really want to see S-T-U-P-I-D people, I mean really stupid

people, you should see the interview he did with that sorry excuse for a

rock guitarist (spell that noise maker) Ted Nugent! Geez Louise, he is the

epitimy of everything that is wrong with the U.S.! Guns, Guns, Guns.

Are you ready for this one? I mean, seriously, you need to sit down. This

guy actually believes what he says and he makes me wonder how we allow

people like him to wander around without a keeper! And I am serious, he

said that if hunters didn't shoot deer that deer would kill us! He actually

asked Donnie Deautch " do you know how many of your neighbor's have been

killed by deer? "

Well, I know how many of my DRUNK neighbors have been killed because they

were drunk and speeding and hit a deer and then ran off the road and killed

themselves. And I do know that every once in awhile some idiot tries to

walk up to a buck in rut and gets gored but hey, things happen to stupid

people!

And old bucky the beaver's wife is just as stupid as he is. According to

her the reason everyone's cholesterol is so high is that they don't go out

and kill their own meat! It is buying food in grocery stores, all those

packaged vegetables that are killing them!

We sat there in stunned silence listening to this guy who swears he's never

taken any drugs and never drank while he talked nine hundred miles to the

minute like a burned out speed freak and only made sense about half the time

and the rest of the time he sounded down right paranoid!

AND, terror warning. All you U.S. residents!

HE IS GOING TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR!

When are we going to move to Canada??????

I do agree Anouk but think that some people don't seem to have the

brain power to read up on good nutrition and health - and the burgers

are so cheap .....

I agree with some and understand what you are saying Fraggle, but I

think Anouk is right. It boils down to you and the decision you make.

It's about the same as drugs and gangs, it's here being pushed at

you left and right, but you are the one who ultimately decides.

Part of it too is awareness. There are plenty of ads like you say,

not enough ads for our side.

Hi Jonnie

I'm sure there was a money consideration somewhere.

Re: Re: Burger Bill

I agree. I have to wonder about how this came to be decided though. Was money a great influence?
