Guest guest
Hi all, I'm new here and new to vegetarianism. I've always been a closet vegetarian , but b/c I'm allergic to dairy , I never got out of the closet. I still ate meat. Thinking it was neccessary for good health. Then I recently read the book " May All Be Fed/Diet for a New World by John Robbins. It was a light bulb moment if not a life-changing revelation. According to the book , too much protien can flush the calicum right out of your system. They cited the example of an African tribe who had a low calicum and protein intake,( they ate veg. but no meat/dairy) and they had no osteoporosis. My doctor is always yelling at me to take 1200mg. or more of calcium daily since I can't drink milk. I've tried but can't b/c it just slows down my digestive system and I'm miserable. The book also mentioned that most vegetables/grains have enough protein to sustain us,even with out doing the combination thing that was one of the main ideas, in " Diet for a Small planet " . A book I dearly loved and read twice, years ago. John Robbins' book also said that " Diet for a Small Planet " was updated and revised to stress the idea that the combination of beans and rice and the amount of protein we actually need daily is not as crucial as her first book stated. I just got the revised " Diet for a Small Planet " from the library to read , can't find mine, I think it's the older version . Does anyone have more reading matieral on this subject or experince on this subject, I'd appreciate hearing about. Thanks, Rosanne
Guest guest
There is lots of protein in Broccoli, and it is more easily absorbed by our bodies than protein from cows because it hasn't already been used to build the cow. Guest guest
Roseanne Your body will tell you better than any doctor. Just pay attention to what your body tells you. I think those African tribesmen are so healthy because they digest everything they eat.Overeating causes toxins. The only proven method of prolonging life is reducing calorie intake. Guest guest
When you take calcium, you also need to take magnesium or the calcium will constipate you. The proportions are approximately 2 parts calcium [preferably citrate] to one part magnesium [preferably citrate] depending on how your body tolerates the effects of the magnesium. I cannot take citrates because of an ulcer, but most people can tolerate them and they are much more absorbent.
