Vegetarian Green Tomato Mincemeat: Not TNT

I have no idea what flax seed is, Jack, having never used it, but I

can tell you that suet is a hard (animal, usually bovine) fat which

looks a little like rice, each of the 'grains' of fat are prevented

from sticking to each other by a very fine dusting of what I presume

is flour. Vegetarian suet is available and works beautifully in

recipes. I would imagine that any hard fat could be used in place of

suet, I think that if you could freeze some hard fat and grate it

(dust it with flour to prevent sticking maybe) that would be as near

to the real thing as anything I can imagine.

Suet is one ingredient in MINCEMEAT (among other things, it also makes

wonderful dumplings!) which is a very sweet filling for mincepies

which also has various types of dried fruit and some form of alcohol

in it, (my grandmother always used brandy if I remember rightly)

which we have at Christmas time.

MINCE is a totally different thing altogether, it is ground meat of

any sort, the sort of thing that you would make hamburgers from, it

is often called just 'minced meat', which is maybe what is causing the

confusion? But this is totally different from 'Mincemeat'.

Jack, I wouldn't think that flax seed could be used in place of suet, I have

some boxes of flax seed and they are something entirely different. Sandra's

description of suet here is perfect, and freezing and grating hard fat

sounds like a perfect idea - maybe what you guys call shortening would work?

I am not sure as I am not entirely sure what shortening is, but it would

definitely need to be a fat of some sort to replace suet.

I think so Carolyn, I have always believed that shortening is a fat

used to make pastry (among other things I am sure).

I forgot that I was using a reduced fat version of vegetarian suet

these days, I got it out of the cupboard to take a look at it last

night! LoL I had forgotten about that! It does have flour in it to

prevent sticking, so I was right about that. Up to now it works

absolutely the same as the full fat/animal versions of suet.
