I go to Real Foods or sometimes New Leaf which are local whole food shops. Increasingly I am finding more whole food items are carried in the supermarkets. I find this a bit of a dilemma - do I buy from them (possibly at cheaper prices than those at the whole food shop) to encourage them to stock more wholefood items or do I support the whole food shops so they don't go out of business meaning that there is less competition for the large supermarkets. I tend to buy more specialist items at the whole food store - nut butters, nuts and seeds for eating, tahini, tofu, tofutti, seeds for sprouting, flour for breadmaking, more unusual grains like quinoa and buckwheat, vegan chocolate, etc. Staples like oats, rice, canned and dried beans I get from the supermarket along with much of my fruit and veg, which I then top up at local greengrocers or at the food coop run once a week at the HIV support centre where I work. Not much point in actually naming products as they would probably only be available over here, but my absolute favourite tofu is a smoked tofu with sunflower seeds made by Taifun http://tinyurl.com/2g78yc I buy this to use in place of feta in a couscous salad, but I can just slice it up and eat it straight from the fridge and I am lucky if there is any left to go in my couscous. Guest guest
I haven't gotten into a routine on shopping yet, but here's my idea (need to figure out how to do it without wasting gas). Produce: farmer's market down the street. Haven't been there yet, but I'm very interested in " going local. " Vegetarian " specialty " stuff, like tofu, hummus, snacks, veggie " meat, " and also cleaning products and toiletries: Vitamin Cottage or Wild Oats (choosing locally made products if available). Other (not too concerned about organic, have to choose my battles - local seems more important - and I'm pinching pennies these days): Regular grocery store like Albertson's. It's the best I can do right now. :-) Andrew

Guest guest
I live in Germany, out in the Country near the Luxembourg border. We are blessed in this area to have fairly frequent street markets which always include a great variety of fresh produce, fresh egg pasta, and more. Some towns have them once a month, but others twice weekly. The best selection is at the twice-weekly farmer's market in Luxembourg City (Especially the man with 30 vaireties of mushrooms!) but is also has by far the highest prices. The 'health foods' stores in this area don't usually have enough traffic to be able to carry a lot of fresh produce. those that do are in pedestrianized downtown districts, and I have difficulty carrying, as I walk with 1/2-crutches. There are a couple of farms near us that have shops in them. One of the shops is run by the family's Grandma - every time I go in there she is in the act of pulling something aromatic and decadent-looking out of the oven! Our local grocers have good selections of 'bio' foods available, and the regular lines are good too, since there is a strong anti-GM food movement, and German farmers don't rely nearly as much on artificial fertilisers and pesticides as in other parts of the world. I do go occasionally to Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Holland for groceries - from where I live it's practical!! Especially if I take girlfriends with me! Guest guest
I live in State College, Pennsylvania. I get vegetarian/healthy products from Wal-Mart, a supermarket, a small locally owned natural foods store called Nature's Pantry, my church, a farmer's market, and the vegetable and flower farm I work for. I use a lot of Morningstar Farms products, which I usually get at Wal-Mart. I also get vegetable broth and dried beans there. I get Gimme Lean sausage-like product at the supermarket and also taco mix made from soy. I get bulk dry goods and Worthington canned foods at Nature's Pantry. Several local farmers bring their produce and eggs to church and sell them and I get my eggs and some produce there. I get many veggies from the farm I work for, and others from the farmer's market where we sell stuff. I get most fruit from the farmer's market. I also get organic, grass-fed dairy products (cheese, milk, butter, yogurt) at the market from an Amish dairy farmer. Because the market is only June through November, I get produce and dairy products at Nature's Pantry or the supermarket during the winter and spring. I believe strongly in supporting local farmers and sustainable agriculture practices as well as eating in a more healthy way and in a way that lessens support for inhumane animal practices. Guest guest
I live in LA but I was born in Catalonia (yes, that is in Spain). We grow a great portion of the vegetables we consume in our garden. However, sometimes not all crops do well, and I have not figured out how to grow mushrooms yet. We did grow bean this year though! yummy.... Trader Joes Ranch 99 (Asian) Vartan's family market on Washigton Ave (Pasadena, Armenian market) The corner market on 52 street and Monte Vista 'Super A' on York and Ave 50 (latin market but they have tofu, and the corn tortillas are so fresh they are still warm!) The last list was for LA. When I am in Spain I shop at La Boqueria in Barcelona, my favorite market in the whole world. , " wwjd " <jtwigg wrote: > > Hi Folks, > Our question of the week, comes from Jeff.
