Guest guest
Can this be thawed before cooking to make it easier to tear in little pieces or do I have to cook these frozen? Guest guest
I'm aware of a number of tofu/soy/seitan loose crumbles and I would assume those should work in packaged or canned meals. Actually I was just thinking about that recently seeing all of those hamburger helper ads on TV. I guess there are several things that come to mind though. The first is to be sure and check the ingredients because I think they might just add things like beef or chicken based flavoring. Also if you're vegan I would certainly check for any dairy/egg products in the ingredients. Finally, I must admit to thinking these would be marvelous and quick and easy to make and also something that non-vegetarians would be more likely to eat without a second thought. However my other worry is the same any time I buy packaged goods, what's really in those preservatives and colorings and . . . . Maybe it's just because I enjoy my frequent feelings of guilt and paranoia . . . . ;<) I keep wondering if living in a nice buddhist center and working the fields would be a good thing. They probably wouldn't want me to bring my stereo and computer though. Darn . . . And yes, where is our Tofu Helper??? I keep reading things about more people going vegetarian. Guest guest
It would be rather pricey to feed a family, but yes it would work. Same with ground up seitan/gluten or ground up thawed and drained tofu (the latter two are much cheaper alternatives). On the other hand, they are great when making meals just for one! (i mean the boca burgers, other ground not meat stuff that you can buy. , " ºoºAnn " Marie Fowler <awesomeann777 wrote: > > Hi all! Guest guest
I use the Boca soy crumbles. We don’t make much hamburger helper or Manwiches, but we do eat a lot of tacos. Well, not a lot but you know… And I use the steak and chicken strips that Morningstar Farms puts out for fajitas and burritos and enchiladas. My son will forget sometimes that they aren’t real meat. _____ Hi all! Is there anything we can put instead of meat in these packaged or canned meals like Hamburger/Tuna/Chicken Helper, Manwich, etc? Guest guest
One thing though. When you do it, just heat the crumbles in the microwave for about 3 minutes – that pretty well thaws them out. Then you can add the taco seasoning and just enough water to moisten it and heat for another minute or 2. If you follow the directions on the taco packages you end up with soup because the crumbles don’t absorb the water, and when you cook on the stove, it doesn’t seem to evaporate well. Pretty much the same for the Manwich – heat it in the microwave until it’s thawed out, then add the sauce and heat for a couple minutes. Now for the HB Helper, the rare occasions we do eat it, we make the pasta part first. Just skip the meat directions on the package and go straight to the “add so much water” blah blah blah directions. About 5 minutes or so before it’s done, add in the crumbles and stir – they’ll be thawed and heated up just fine by the time it’s done. _____ Hi all! Guest guest
I brown the crumbles or Worthington Vegetarian burger in a little oil. It gives it a great taste. - Beth Renzetti Friday, September 14, 2007 3:17 PM Re: Packaged or Canned Meals ? the crumbles are like cooked ground beef.
