Guest guest
Hello everyone. I am hoping that someone can help me with this. My five year old does not presently take any nutritional supplements, but I would like her to take a multi. The problem is that I have not been able to find a chewable that does not burn her mouth. She is very, very sensitive to tastes. We have tried the conventional Flintstones- type vitamins as well as the Whole Foods Kangavites. All of the above burn her mouth. Does anyone have any suggestions? We are considering offering her the Juice Plus gummies. They are not multis, but we figure that they can't hurt. Has anyone tried them? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? We eat a fairly average veg diet, but I tend to be a little anemic and I expect that she will be too. Thus, I want to be ready when I discuss this with the pediatrician. Thank you so much for any thoughts!! Jen

Guest guest
try going to a health food store or grocery and look for kids vits. They would not have anything in them that was not natural and would probably not burn her mouth...just a thought. Jeanne

Guest guest
Speaking of multivitamins, my teenage daughter has been taking CVS chewable Spectravite multivitamins for several years. Her sister recommended it since it did not contain gelatin. However, with my recent experience with " 100% orange juice, " I've been reading labels more closely. We were disturbed to read on her multivitamins: " This product contains fish (cod, pollock, haddock, hake, cusk, redfish, sole, flounder) ingredients. " Plus, gelatin is now listed as an ingredient as well! Sometimes I feel like vegetarians are fighting a losing battle. The only products you can trust are those you grow in your own garden. Guest guest
You are 100% right. We simply waste our money on multivitamins tabs and forget what is available to us in our garden. You sit in sun and get vit D. You eat green you get natural vitamins. We arw not fighting a losing battle. You will be surprised that I do not even drink Milk as I concider it a non veg product. And I am 68 fit like any thing. Guest guest
Hi Lucinda, I take the Swiss brand Vegetarian Multi-vitamin (that's exactly what it's called)- no gelatin, no fish oils, no dairy. It's completely vegan. It costs about 1/3 more than the drugstore brand, but worth it for the peace of mind. I find it in our local drugstore. There are other brands at the health food store, but they seem to be much more expensive... According to my friends who work for the Canadian Federal Government department that's writing the regulations for natural supplements, it's a buyer-beware situation right now. The customer has to educate themselves and investigate the company's practices in order to determine whether the extra money is truly worth what they are paying for. Good luck! Guest guest
Thanks so much for all of the replies. Rainbow Light sounds like a good contender. I checked their website and found that they have vitamin powder, which might be gentler since it is mixed with liquid. I appreciate it! Guest guest
I agree, Amar. We waste our money on vitamins and play into the hands of pharmaceutical companies. There are studies now that show that added vitamins can even be harmful. With vitamins freely available, the body gets lazy and loses the ability to extract vitamins from the food we eat. If you think your body needs one or more of certain vitamins it would be better to find out which foods contain these vitamins and eat some of them. Omega 3 is the flavour of the month here (and there it seems) There is a big promotion for Fish oil and Flax seed oil, but there are other foods that contain omega 3, like walnuts, soybeans, navy beans, kidney beans, tofu but those don't get a mention ..... because pharmaceutical companies can't make a profit from them. http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient & dbid=84 Harry, now steps off soapbox. Guest guest
I am afraid that most of the nationally known brands of supplements tend to be less than the best quality. However, if you pay enough, you can get vegetarian supplements that are good quality. A friend of mine is in Naturopath Medical School and she said that some of the inexpensive supplements actually contain small amounts of shellac. About 15 years ago I was on a local food Coop board for 10+ years. I became horrified at the standard food industry and the unhealthful food that they sell. Now that I can afford it, I only buy organic. I try to buy fresh foods that are raised locally. I avoid the standard food industries, like General Mills, etc. All you can do is read labels. Be aware that the standard food industry is now buying up many of the old good quality natural foods companies and they are reformulating the products. Be sure you read labels. If the container design changes, it may be be an indication that the product has been reformulated.
