ALERT: GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SUGAR TO HIT STORES IN 2008

American Crystal, a large Wyoming-based sugar company, who ironically

have launched an " organic " line of their sugar, and several other

leading U.S. sugar providers have announced they will be sourcing

their sugar from genetically engineered (GE) sugar beets beginning

this year and arriving in stores in 2008. Like GE corn and GE soy,

products containing GE sugar will not be labeled as such. Since half

of the granulated sugar in the U.S. comes from sugar beets, a move

towards biotech beets marks a dramatic alteration of the U.S. food

supply. These sugars, along with GE corn and soy, are found in many

conventional food products, so consumers will be exposed to

genetically engineered ingredients in just about every non-organic

multiple-ingredient product they purchase.

The GE sugar beet is designed to withstand strong doses of Monsanto's

controversial broad spectrum Roundup herbicide. Studies indicate

farmers planting " Roundup Ready " corn and soy spray large amounts of

the herbicide, contaminating both soil and water. Farmers planting GE

sugar beets are told they may be able to apply the herbicide up to

five times per year. Sugar beets are grown on 1.4 million acres by

12,000 farmers in the U.S. from Oregon to Minnesota.

Meanwhile candy companies like Hershey's are urging farmers not to

plant GE sugar beets, noting that consumer surveys suggest resistance

to the product. In addition the European Union has not approved GE

sugar beets for human consumption.

I also mostly use honey. I use organic sugar sometimes and maple

syrup but I imagine maple syrup is non-existent in Australia.

Dear Guru,

We get our maple syrup from Canada; several supermarkets, here, have it, but

it's expensive. And well worth it.

Got to have me maple syrup, lol.

Thanks Guru for the great post!

As a people and nation we MUST be aware of these types of genetic

modifications to our food supply - as this is our FOOD SUPPLY we are

talking about, Not for medicines or cures for some illness - OUR

FOOD SUPPLY!!! - Why ARE WE THE ONLY WESTERNIZED COUNTRY IN THE

WORLD to allow this type of adulteration to our food supply?!? With

no testing - no third party research - no nothing - just taking " FOR

PROFIT " corporate ag's word for it that it's safe for us? Other

countries, like the EU, Australia, and Japan don't even let these

types of foods in their countries?!? why?

Coming from Mendocino county California! the FIRST county in the

United States to BAN GMO's (genetically modified organisms) - we

know first hand the fight, dirty tricks and lies that corporate

agriculture puts up when it comes to these types plants... BE AWARE -

ASK QUESTIONS - why do other countries ban these types of foods?

Where is the testing being done and by whom? and for how long? What

are the long term effects? Questions that as a county we can never

get straight answers to!

Our small community of 90,000 people in the whole county - in a

grass roots effort, about 5,000-7000 people raised barely $57,000,

beat the pavement, talked to our neighbors and got the word out! -

and defeated Monsanto in our county - by just educating our people.

And, making them aware of what was being sold to us as a bill of

goods! Why did Monsanto spend over 3 million dollars, trying to

squash a local measure in a small county in northern california?

Becuase they KNOW what they are doing IS NOT in the best interest of

our people and country, it's all about " PROFIT " .

Be Aware brothers and sisters... NOW more than ever before - BE

AWARE - READ the label - Go Organic - it's the only regulation we

have as a community to protect our foods - and - even the

USDA " Organic " labeling guideline has flaws in it!

Always, always, always - eat as close to the source as possible,

grow it yourself then you'll know what's in it, shop at the local

farmer's markets, support organic farmers, and organic in your local

grocery store, ask for organic products from your grocer - they will

bring it in if YOU as the consumer ask for it! WE DO!

Again, thanks for sharing the great post Guru - blessings to all and

remember to ask... that one simple question - why?

Mendo

This post is mild. Here is another article that hits on a much

bigger human scale. Many farmers (thousands) in India have committed

suicide because of draconian business methods of multinational

companies. Plus the same practices are starting to be imported to

Iraq. I would post the article but it is copyrighted. Here is the

link.

Dear Guru,

A 1/2 litre of maple syrup down under costs from $11 up, so it's no wonder

it's considered " amber gold " , lol.

Dear Bron,

Is Steeves Maple Syrup pure maple syrup without any other sugars or

additives? It seems to me that my father-in-law bought it for me and was

annoyed that it had other sugars in it I couldn't have, and Dad was a

caterer.

Cheers
