Guest guest
I don't know if anyone else noticed this but sometimes recipes in Vegetarian Times don't turn out good. I've had that problem with their first edition cookbook too. Donna Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile " Denise Gontard Cartwright " <dgontard Tue, 9 Oct 2007 11:14:37 RE: Your recommendations for best vegetarian or vegan books? The ones I go back to time and again are The Moosewood Cookbook (2nd Edition), Moosewood Cooks at Home, and The Compaissonate Cook by Ingrid Newkirk (this is the PETA cookbook). They have some of the best basic vegan & vegetarian recipes I've ever found. I would buy another copy of The Vegetarian Times Cookbook just for the Pad Thai recipe. I haven't found as good a one since. (I had the first edition and the index didn't match up with the recipes, ultimately extremely frustrating! So I gave it away - no point in keeping a cookbook around that size, if you can't find anything in it!). For more exotic tastes, I have a wonderful cookbook called Lord Krishna's Cuisine. Don't let the title put you off. This is an OUTSTANDING East Indian cookbook. I'd also highly recommend Madhur Jaffey's World Vegetarian. My sister gave me a copy of The Garden of Vegan a couple of years ago. I've tried a few things from it and so far I am not disappointed Those are just a few of the maybe 50 recipe books I have. Hope that helped Denise Gontard Cartwright ----- From : thebooklass[farmlass (AT) hotmail (DOT) <farmlass%40hotmail.com> com] Sent : 10/9/2007 9:15:21 AM To : @ <%40> Cc : Subject : RE: Your recommendations for best vegetarian or vegan books? My favourite vegetarian cookbook so far (apart from Madhur Jeffrey's Eastern Vegetarian Cooking) is Lorna Sass's Shortcut Vegetarian: every recipe I tried from it turned out delicious, as well as easy and quick to prepare (a necessity for me 5 nights out of 7!). I have another few of her books, but that's the best one, IMHO. Guest guest
I would recommend The New Becoming Vegetarian: The Essential Guide To A Healthy Vegetarian Diet by Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis as a very good how to book. I've only been vegetarian for a year and a half and I have learned so much from it. I haven't tried any of the recipes in it because I'm not big on trying new recipes. For me, being vegetarian is about becoming more ethical by not eating animals and leaving less of an environmental footprint. But even though I did not become vegetarian for health reasons, I have lost weight and noticed better health in general. This book is big on nutritional information, which is useful. It's a very good introduction on the why's and how's. Something I like about it is that the authors, who also wrote Becoming Vegan, clearly believe vegan is the way to go, which I also believe, and they present the case that it's not much harder to be vegan than vegetarian. That inspires me, even though I'm not there yet, because I don't actually like most vegetables. But as I learn more about legumes, which I love, I know I'll be able to become vegan someday. Karen in PA Specifically, what is the best how to book you know of and what is your favorite cookbook? And why? I want to build a library for this new way of eating, and I have a few books, but I don't have a good how to book. Lori in Texas
